Adam Wainwright won his 15th game putting him alone atop the National League as the Cardinals beat the Braves 3-1 on Friday night. Wainwright struck out nine and allowed just six hits in a complete game improving to 15-7. He also moved into third on the Cardinals' all-time strikeout list passing Chris Carpenter (1085) and trailing just Bob Gibson (3117) and Dizzy Dean (1095). Wainwright is at 1090 meaning he could easily be No. 2 after his next start. It was his fifth complete-game of the season tying his career high for a season and his 16th career complete game. Braves starter Kris Medlen was dominating for a long stretch of the game but two doubles just inside first base in the second and a blast into the left-field bleachers in the sixth were his undoing. Yadier Molina and Jon Jay hit back-to-back doubles to start the second inning and combined they were probably fair by five feet. Jay's double drove in Molina and put the Cardinals up 1-0. Medlen then retired 12 straight Cardinals and in the top of the sixth he put the Braves on the board. He hit a leadoff single was sacrificed to second moved to third on an infield out and scored on an RBI single by Freddie Freeman to tie the game. Medlen's time on the bases may have taken a toll as four of the next six Cardinals reached base. The key at-bat was Matt Holliday's home run into the left-field stands that put the Cards back in the lead 2-1. Molina hit another double in the seventh and he went to third on a single by Jay. That took Medlen out of the game in favor of left reliever Scott Downs who struck out David Freese though not before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Jay to go to second. Daniel Descalso walked to load the bases and Wainwright helped himself with a sacrifice fly almost to the warning track in center.
