Have we lost our collective minds? The Washington Redskins might be forced to change their name to the Redtails? What the heck is that? I don't even know what a Redtail is!Somebody is thinking way too hard for an excuse to make an issue out of something that is not an issue. So here is a politician who feels it is his responsibility (Washington D.C. councilman David Grosso, for anyone who wishes to give him a piece of their mind) to stir up political correctness a.k.a. racism where none is actually happening. What football fan thinks disparagingly about Native Americans when they watch the Washington Redskins playing football on Sundays? Are we not more interested in how long the beer and chips will hold out?But I digress...Here's the issue in a nutshell:Politics and sports don't mix. It's bad enough that Roger Goodell, our eminent football commissioner, is rapidly turning our favorite sport into two-hand touch. But we don't need some suit butting in and telling us that a name that has been a storied part of a team's long history in this league, is now not "appreciated" by a segment of the population that has no real interest in the sport they play; a sport that has entertained millions for generations. As a concerned taxpayer, I have a job for Councilman Grosso: watch a few games and see the pride that goes along with the name and logo the Redskins wear. It has to do with something many don't understand today. There is no racism there; there is no discrimination. Football brings people together.Let's send a message:Stop finding ways to divide us. Help us do what all good citizens ought to do: let us get together and have a little fun without worrying about who is or isn't offended by a picture or a name. Maybe we could focus on the honor that is brought to the Native American culture by the representatives on the field, rather than the conflict brought by the representatives in government. Our traditions are not the problem. And the Redskins will always be the Redskins for those of us to whom it really matters.
