Once again, the Washington Redskins proved to disappoint in this afternoon’s game against the Detroit Lions. Over the course of their first three games, the Redskins have looked overmatched on offense, defense, and special teams. At 0-3, fans are already beginning to wonder if this year is going to be over before it truly starts. Robert Griffin III’s knee injury is beginning to look like it will effect the Redskins over the course of two seasons. Ever since Griffin suffered his knee injury against the Baltimore Ravens near the end of the 2012 season, the Redskins offense has not been the same. The read-option has essentially evaporated and play action is not making nearly as much impact on opposing defenses. This was no different today against Detroit as the Redskins could not score a touchdown when they needed it most. Today the Redskins offense waited one possession to long to score a much needed touchdown. In the middle of the fourth quarter, it appeared the Redskins had taken the lead when Griffin connected with Aldrick Robinson on a deep ball for a touchdown. However, replay reversed this decision and Griffin went on to fumble later in the possession. Robert Griffen III Defensively the Redskins looked like they have improved on the first two games, but were still not where they need to be in the secondary. Calvin Johnson shredded the secondary all day, but then again he does that to most teams. The Washington safeties look more lost mentally than physically, which can be corrected if the defenders get their heads in the right place. An 0-3 record makes at Oakland next week a must win. Before the season, no one would have considered beating Oakland a challenge but now things are beginning to look a bit different. If the Redskins struggle to contain a dual-threat quarterback in Terrell Pryor, it could be a long day. Washington must improve both offensively and defensively as one more poor performance could lead to kissing the playoffs and a winning season goodbye.
