The Pac-12 dubbed itself the conference of quarterbacks in 2011. Next season, it might be the conference of coaches. With Rich Rodriguezs nameplate mounted on an office door in Tucson, Mike Leach headed to Washington State and UCLA making a strong push for Boise States Chris Petersen, the conferences coaching profile could augment dramatically. Leach will be paid a base annual salary of 2 million, with supplemental income of 250,000 a year, plus performance incentives, Washington State athletic director Bill Moos said. The L.A. Times reported that Athletic Director Dan Guerrero will meet with the 47-year-old Petersen and offer him a contract worth 3 million annually. The deal will also include about 2 million for assistant coaches. What does this mean for Arizona State? It means the stakes have been raised. Not because the candidates are falling like flies. Dont be fooled into thinking ASU has to react quickly. The aforementioned names were never candidates in Tempe, anyway. Petersen will have his pick of the litter if he chooses to leave Boise. He was never coming to Tempe. Rodriguez and Leach were never candidates to begin with. And by the way, neither is Mike Martz. But the money paid to Leach will increase ASUs required payout. If Pullman can afford 2 million-plus for Leach, ASU will have to go significantly higher if it wants a guy like the University of Houstons Kevin Sumlin. And it still must contend with the wealthy likes of Penn State, Illinois, Kansas and maybe UCLA, if Petersen declines. Texas A&M could also enter the fray according to a report in The Houston Chronicle, ramping up the stakes for Sumlin and possibly leaving Southern Mississippis Larry Fedora as a fall-back option. The added revenue from the launch of the Pac-12 Networks will help ASU compete, although it wont be the 20 million widely reported. There are added costs that all conference schools are facing between facilities and equipment upgrades and travel that will drop that figure somewhere between 10 and 15 million. But ASU wont get off cheap. Which makes you appreciate how wise Arizona was to fire Mike Stoops midseason and hire a new coach quickly. Think Rodriguez is having second thoughts about that five-year, 9.55 million deal?
