Starting nickel safety M.D. Jennings struggled in the opener against the 49ers Anyone surprised that the Packers couldn’t stop quarterback Alex Smith and the 49ers’ offense either doesn’t read this blog or didn’t pay enough attention during the month of August. No team has more holes in its nickel and dime packages than Green Bay, and every one of them was exposed on Sunday afternoon. Starting right cornerback (I still can’t believe I’m writing that) Jarrett Bush deserves no blame for what happened. He actually performed as well as could be expected – and that’s the problem. The career special teamer has no business playing – let alone starting – on defense. I thought it was a joke when Bush opened training camp atop the depth chart. Six weeks later, the only peope laughing are opposing quarterbacks. I’m no expert, but it took me all of three practices to see that M.D. Jennings wasn’t ready to start in the sub-packages. And yet, there he was, lining up opposite Morgan Burnett in the nickel and dime. To the surprise of nobody (except the coaches), he was a liability. Jennings lacks experience, and he doesn’t have the physical skills to compensate. Jerron McMillian eventually replaced him, and the rookie from Maine figures to keep the job. Whether that translates to improved play at the position remains to be seen. I’m not sure anything can be done to fix things at this late date, but coordinator Dom Capers needs to try something. I would start Sam Shields at right corner and insert McMillian and fellow rookie Casey Hayward in the dime. Will that help? I’m not sure, but it can’t hurt. Of course, what the defense really needs is a fierce pass rush. That means young players like defensive end Jerel Worthy and outside linebacker Nick Perry have to win more one on one battles than they did four days ago against San Francisco.

Packers' Jarrett Bush claims that the 49ers did not beat them

GREEN BAY, Wis. – On a normal day David Akers tying an NFL record on a 63-yard field goal would have been the lead story from a regular season game. But when his team the San Francisco 49ers serves up a very confident win over the NFC’s team to beat, his accomplishment becomes one piece of a very large pie. From the first tick off the game clock, Green Bay was snuffed out in...

San Francisco 49ers: Are They Now Officially the NFC Favorite?

I was in that small group of preseason prediction makers that did not pick the San Francisco 49ers to make it to the Super Bowl this year. It’s early, and it’s still one game, but after beating the team I picked to win the Super Bowl, on the road, in week 1, that egg might already be sliding down my face. By now, we all know how sick the Niners defense is. They had Aaron Rodgers...

Packers remain confident after opening loss

The 49ers, who were an overtime win away from reaching the Super Bowl in 2011, came into Lambeau Field...

Week 2 Waiver Wire and Flier's

QBAlex Smith - If you are going into week 2 and looking for QB help or playing the matchups, look at Smith.  He is home against Detroit in what is set up to be a high scoring affair. Last week Alex put up 211 yards and 2 TD’s on 20 of 26 passing for a 125.6 rating. Coming off a big win in Green Bay and back home for the season opener, there should be an amped up San Fran crowd...

Philly Sports World Fantasy Week 1 Recap, Eating CROW

Philly Sports World Fantasy Week 1 Fantasy Week 1 Gloating and eating CROW Picking the 49ers by 10 in Green Bay I missed the mark by 2. San Francisco 49ers: 2012 Week 2 Power Ranking (#13)

Last week: 19 (+6) Record: 1-0 This is the 2nd straight controversial ranking. I had the 49ers missing the playoffs before the season and the Rams making it. I don’t want to repeat myself with the reason, but basically it was because the Rams would have better injury luck, better coaching, and the addition of guys through free agency, while the 49ers would struggle to maintain...
