Not that it's particularly surprising news at this point, but WEEI's Rob Bradford says the Sox landing Roy Oswalt at this point looks really unlikely:

According to a major league source, there is 'no traction' in talks between the Red Sox and free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt. While there always remains a possibility the two sides could come to an agreement, such a scenario doesn't seem likely at this point.

The fact that nothing came of Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson (now signed with Washington) makes the timing of the Marco Scutaro trade all the more perplexing. Sure, we still had a few arbitration cases still out there (and still have the potential $4 million swing in the Ortiz decision), and it did free up the space to sign Cody Ross, but his deal didn't exactly break the bank.

I don't necessarily have anything against trading Scutaro -- he's getting older and likely to deteriorate or regress -- but more the process that we took to get there. Why then -- several weeks after dealing Jed Lowrie, but without a true plan for the money left over?

I don't blame Oswalt, either, for the record. If I were trying to build up my reputation before getting one last contract, I'd be looking at the NL Central too. It's a lot easier to put away the Pirates and Cubs than it is the Orioles and Blue Jays.
