WEEK FOUR: BUCKING THE TREND

Posted September 27, 2013

THIS game should be a shootout. I can even imagine this game hitting the 80 total point mark. Seriously. It bothers me how all the talk is about Manning vs. our lackluster Defense. You'd think all he was going to do is show up and play catch. There is dear friends, ANOTHER Offense capable of putting up points that will appear on that field that day. And in that very same game from what I'm told!.

Denver's hyper-aggressive front seven is not a strength this week. They're going against a scheme that is PREDICATED on deception. Add to that the fact that at all three levels (QB, RB, WR/TE), we have players with enough speed and open-field running skills to punish anybody who guesses wrong.

As far as taking away Manning's strengths, I doubt we'll be good enough to do that, but we WILL manage to exploit one of his worst weaknesses. Mentally, he handles getting hit worse than most QB's I've seen. It takes him out of his cozy zone, and makes him rush reads, calls, and causes overthrows. (I had him in fantasy a couple times and became a stalker, STUDENT, of his game.)

We suck at covering the flat and crossing routes. That's no secret. What's also no secret though, is we will trade those routes to hit the QB. I think the trick to this game is to be willing to bleed early, as we lay hit upon hit on Manning. If you can rattle him, you can deconstruct their whole offense.

I said last week that the RAIDERS would be more competitive than most people thought. The RAIDERS stuck to what they do well, and as I said it was more lively than most thought it would be. If the EAGLES stick to what they do well, some people could go to bed rather surprised Sunday night. That all said, this guy is a HOF QB for a reason.

My Pick: 33 - 47 Broncos

  • That's a lot of points Flip. I have rarely seen Manning rattled. They were not happy with the game they played against the Raiders so they may be playing with a chip on their shoulder. I give credit to the Raiders for that. I do think it's going to be high scoring. Broncos 45-21.
  • Broncos 45 Eagles 17
  • Problem is manning has been killing teams in the flat this year. He's hardly taking shots down field. He has the play makers to turn it up field after a quick throw. If we can tackle like the skins game and force a couple punts we have a shot not a good one but still a shot. The scary thing is what rivers did to our defense is what manning is the master of. Get to the line fast don't let the defense sub read it change the offense and destroy teams. They have the fifth fastest offense between snaps. We r second. ( bills r first). The major difference is their defense is good. It's not great but it's way better than ours and their qb is way better than ours plus he's playing like a mad man. Hopefully the high altitude doesn't effect our guys too bad and can wear down their defense like Peyton will do to ours. This has a chance to be a great game or a major blow out.

    I'm going 38-31 eagles.
  • So you get it. I'm also concerned with the altitude+pace thing considering that Kelce was on oxygen in D.C. vs the 'skins. Denver also plays fast, but they practice and live there, so their bodies have had longer to adapt to those factors.

Kelly coached against Colorado U, and had a pretty good record against them, so I'm sure he's familiar with what needs to be done, it's just a matter of whether older players can adapt fast enough to all the factors.

As far as getting murdered in the flat and underneath, I think we just have to stick with that, and be willing to bleed a little this week. Give him the underneath area and tackle. Let the Broncos eat clock and slowly walk us into the redzone where we can crowd the area to take away some of those throws, and just let those long drives become FG's.

If we can do that and execute on Offense, the win is ours. The thing is, I lack confidence in our tackling. Especially a BEAST like Demaryius Thomas.
  • I was off by a touchdown Flip. Denver is unstoppable. They are clearly the team to beat in the East. My Cowboys laid an egg in San Diego who look pretty good this year. Big win for the Skins against your Raiders. I was shocked at the outcome of that one. Just another week in the NFL. Have a good week bro.
  • You were closer than me by a FG Tony, Nice pick. And I know they beat up my guys also...but 52 POINTS!!! Yikes!! That was a freaking clinic. You may be right, the Broncos should, if they stay away from injuries, be the AFC Champs this season.
  • Thanks GR. The Eagles really took a beating. Nice thread on Andy too. I really liked it. What a coach. Have a good week bro.
