WELCOME BACK OMAR GAITHER!

Posted July 29, 2013

ADDING Omar Gaither to the roster was a solid move. When Coach said in November that Miles Burris might move to MLB in 2013, I figured that Phillip Wheeler would play one OLB spot and that we'd get a new guy for the other spot.

Well, we let Wheeler walk and brought in Nick Roach, and Sio Moore. How could a fan argue with that? But again, this was still with the idea of Burris in the middle. Unfortunately his recovery from knee surgery was taking longer than expected, so we also added Kaluka Maiava.

Maiava was one of a number of guys we added to give us some fire on Defense. The idea was that these guys could get a new lease on their NFL careers if they were willing to fight for it. The problem with Maiava is that he was apparently all too willing to fight. Now he could be facing jail time for a bar room brawl.

My guess is that Gaither was added with an eye towards letting Maiava walk. I certainly hope so. Even if Maiava beats the charge, I think it sends the wrong message to your core players if you'll allow a fringe player to jeopardize your program. You can't have a criminal element on your team and expect discipline and good decision making.
