I gotta say I’m pretty pumped about Notre Dame’s move to the ACC despite their football program remaining independent. After all everyone knows trying to get Notre Dame to give up their independent status and their network deal with NBC (which still doesn’t expire till 2015) is a near impossibility.

I was a huge advocate for Clemson and FSU to go to the Big 12 every time the topic came up mainly because the ACC is a bore. I wanted more competition from high level teams and call me picky but playing NC State, Maryland, Boston College and Wake Forest every year just doesn’t do that for me. Whether Clemson was a 10-4 ACC Champ or a 6-7 team that lost to South Florida in a bowl game, I still wanted that competition boost.

So today’s announcement brings great excitement because regardless of Notre Dame’s recent shortcomings, the facts don’t lie America….they’re a major program with huge TV interests. Instead of looking all over the internet for a link to Clemson at Maryland, Notre Dame is on the TV screen week after week and carries the weight of one of the most powerful programs in America. It just made the ACC significantly more interesting and relevant to the nation.

As it stands we’re looking at a rotating schedule where Notre Dame will play five ACC games a year, rotating which ACC teams they’ll play. Ideal? Not really. I’d rather Notre Dame play eight ACC games a year and be a conference member but we can’t all have our cake and eat it too. So this is the next best thing I guess and I’ll be content with that.

The other interesting note is that Notre Dame could still end up playing an ACC team in the Orange Bowl if it came down to it, so while the Irish will have semi-ACC affiliation, the opportunity for a rematch could present itself if the ACC champ is a team Notre Dame played over the course of the season. On top of that, the Irish get ACC bowl ties with provisions in place for them to meet performance wise in order to qualify for a certain ACC bowl over a full-member team.

In regards to other sports, well, I honestly don’t care. Especially here at Clemson it’s 1) Football, 2) Football Recruiting, 3) Football Rumors, 4) Football Spring Practice, 5) Baseball….etc. The ACC football slate just got a lot more interesting when Notre Dame officially joins the league and it will allow me the patience as I await a hopeful expansion to four super-conferences at some point.

So Notre Dame, as a person who has never hated you like others have, and as someone who has enjoyed watching Brian Kelly’s meltdowns, the Leprechaun mascot jump around, and a game on NBC every Saturday for a number of years, this is my formal welcome to you.

We’re happy to have you in the ACC…now lets figure out what the next step is to ultimately make you a full-time member in the near future.
