Several hundred people have taken part in a paddle-out in front of Junior Seau's Southern California home to pay tribute to the former NFL linebacker.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/LpeO5y ) that participants at Sunday's seaside memorial included Seau's former teammate Drew Brees, who played quarterback for the San Diego Chargers when Seau was the star linebacker.
The 43-year-old Seau committed suicide Wednesday at his home in Oceanside.
Seau was an avid surfer who was often seen riding the waves in front of his home. Fans and well-wishers formed a circle across the water and held hands while a prayer was said for him.
They also chanted Seau's name and the number 55, his number at Southern California and during 20 years in the NFL.

Washington Redskins LB London Fletcher on what Junior Seau’s suicide has meant to him.
Fletcher hopes the league will make it mandatory for retired players to undergo counseling sessions so that there are less situations like Seau’s.

Concussions, brain trauma, and resulting issues are a significant issue. However, the lawsuits we are seeing are a contradiction. While the league owns some responsibility, it is the players themselves, and their refusal as a group to take responsibility for safety is as much an issue.
Players are joining concussion lawsuits against the NFL that a rate that hardly makes them noteworthy...

There is no denying the tragic nature of the death of linebacker Junior Seau last week, but the media, as it has done so far, needs to continue to practice the responsibility demonstrated to date, and to keep tapping the brakes on any rush to judgment about the potential role of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) on his suicide.
