With the Avs having about 25 NHL ready defensemen in their mix right now, I see some people a bit anxious about what happens to Cameron Guance, Tyson Barrie, and Stephan Elliott. I wouldn't worry too much. They three of them are 22, 20 & 21 years of age, respectively. Very young for defensemen.I did some research on Defensemen this weekend for the last two blog posts, and here's who I looked at: Zanon, Hejda, O'Byrne, Colaiacovo, Garrison, & Carle. Of that group only Carle got any regular NHL time before the age of 25. Just a reminder that if those guys stay in LE the next few seasons, they aren't busts or anything. It's pretty common for defensemen to need some seasoning.

Top-scoring defenseman Erik Johnson is staying with the Colorado Avalanche. The team announced Tuesday that it signed the 24-year-old restricted free agent to a four-year contract. The terms weren't released. Johnson led all Avalanche defensemen last season with 26 points in 73 games. The Bloomington, Minn., native won a silver medal while playing with the U.S. team at the...

Which version of Jay McClement are the Maple Leafs getting?

The only real dip into the unrestricted free agent market yesterday by the Toronto Maple Leafs was the signing of 3rd/4th line center Jay McClement.  Jay McClement’s best season in the NHL point wise was in 2009-10 when he had 11 goals and 29 points and last year he had 10 goals and 17 points for the Avalanche so clearly he wasn’t signed to produce offense.  The question is...

Coming off a 67-point season with the New York Islanders, Parenteau agreed to a four-year contract, the Avalanche announced Sunday. TSN reported the deal could be for $16 million. In two seasons with the Islanders, the 29-year-old Parenteau had 38 goals and 82 assists. "P.A. is a skilled...

Joe Sakic’s Hall Of Fame Case

I am returning to my Hall of Fame case posts for the 2012 inductees. I have written posts for Pavel Bure and Adam Oates. Today I move onto Joe Sakic. I will give his Hall of Fame case using the Keltner List. This is a series of qualitative questions first publicized by Bill James in baseball that capture a player’s Hall of Fame case. Continue reading "Joe Sakic...
