Pierre LeBrun of ESPN answers some email rants… Please tell me what is wrong with the Washington Capitals, I just do not understand. They have such talented individuals in Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, and Green (when healthy), to name a few home-grown stars. While the usual production of these players is below par, save Backstrom, that cannot solely explain why the team is doing so poorly…. LeBrun:  To me they just rarely look like a “team.” The elite clubs in this league—think Detroit over the past 20-odd years—play as five-man units up and down the ice. They limit gaps for opposing teams to exploit. They control/manage the puck smartly as units. They avoid taking lazy/selfish penalties. That’s what the elite teams in this league do. The Caps have not been that team this year. Alex Ovechkin has but 12 goals. He’s not the same dominant force. The goaltending has been inconsistent. And the Caps are 20th out of 30 teams in five-on-five goals for/against ratio—that’s an important stati...

Capitals C Perreault taken to hospital

Washington Capitals center Mathieu Perreault was taken to a hospital after sustaining what the team called an upper-body injury in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. A team spokesperson said the plan was for Perreault to rejoin the team in Washington on Tuesday after staying in Buffalo overnight, though he noted Perreault may not necessarily stay in the hospital. Capitals G Vokoun not happy with role of backup

Washington Capitals goaltender Tomas Vokoun isn't thrilled with being reduced to a backup. After starting the season strong, Vokoun has been on the bench since Dec. 13 and seen Michal Neuvirth play the last five contests. "I can't really tell you. I don't know what I did wrong to be in this spot," Vokoun told the Washington Times. "I'm a professional...

Rapid Rewind: Top Gun

WASHINGTON - For one night, at least, the Washington Capitals looked like the team everyone knows they can be.  Alexander Semin scored two goals for the first time this season, Alex Ovechkin recorded two points in a game for the first time in 23 contests, and Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in his first start in over two weeks, as the Caps romped to a 4-1 win inside Verizon Center...

30 Thoughts Before The End Of The Year

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC, • Is George McPhee ready to shake up his roster? Couple other teams say the Capitals are a club to watch. • Big win Monday night for Bruce Boudreau. Rapid Rewind: Speared

The Washington Capitals were embarrassed, again, by the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night, falling 4-2 inside First Niagara Center.  Michal Neuvirth was pulled after half a period after allowing three goals, and Tomas Vokoun was solid in relief but by then the damage was already done.  Matt Hendricks and Alex Ovechkin made it look more respectable with goals well after the result...
