The Cavaliers are a more productive team with Irving and Varejao on the court together. With Irving on the floor and Varejao on the bench, the Cavaliers score 99.1 points and allow 115.4 points per 100 possessions. With Irving and Varejao on the floor at the same time, Cleveland scores 104.8 points and allows 104.1 points per 100 possessions. A team never says never about trading a player. But put Varejao’s value in perspective and alongside Cleveland’s values and goals, don’t be surprised if general manager Chris Grant takes phone calls from other executives and says “No thanks. We’re not trading Anderson Varejao.” [Zillgitt/USA Today] —- “From the Tribe fan’s perspective, the big deal here was the Indians getting Trevor Bauer. Bauer was Baseball America’s #9 prospect going into the 2012 season, and he didn’t do anything to ruin the praise heaped on him; he held allowed just 107 hits in 130.1 minor-league innings, striking out 157. He did have some control problems, walking 61, but that was the only real knock on his performance. And keep in mind that 2012 was Bauer’s first full season in professional baseball; after being drafted third overall in the 2011 draft, he signed in mid-August and only threw 25.2 innings. So why the heck was Bauer traded given his draft pedigree and success? It seems that one of the reasons was that Bauer and the Arizona staff didn’t see eye-to-eye on his conditioning strategy. Bauer is a proponent of extreme long-tossing and works with rubber tubes, an approach that is almost completely at odds with most major-league conditioning regimens. His stuff is excellent, starting with a 12-6 curve, and including a mid-90s fastball. He has two other good pitches (and slider and splitter) and that makes him one of the best pitching prospects in the game. His upside is a top of the rotation pitcher.” [Ryan/Let's Go Tribe] —- “Considering his worse performance across-the-board compared to last year; Alonzo Gee may be a surprising answer. Fifteen months ago, I did not think he was an NBA player. Two months ago, after last season’s crazy, condensed schedule, where Gee spent the first two-thirds of the season playing well, and the last-third completely derailing, I was still on the fence about Gee. After the first twenty games of this season, I am content that AG serves as a completely fine rotation player at a reasonable cost. ” [Hetrick/Cavs the Blog] —- “He coaches in a league where dollar store hires like Danny Hope had the audacity to be cocky, not unlike a fruit fly with an erection backstroking down a river while howling that the drawbridge needs to be raised immediately. But most of all, he coaches in a league where an 8-4 season proudly ends up in 75% of the trophy cases. And he coaches at a school where going 12-0 isn’t good enough for Coach of the Year honors. The B1G’s version of this award is granted only for temporarily overcoming institutional mediocrity. That is categorically how this thing is decided every year. The drought for Ohio State coaches extends back to 1979, when Earle Bruce was rewarded for taking Woody Hayes’ refugees to the Rose Bowl. See, Earle wasn’t supposed to be that good so quickly – filling Woody’s shoes was expected to be more challenging. That’s why he won it. Since then, none of Ohio State’s conference titles (13) or undefeated regular seasons (3) have merited the honor for its head coach. Going undefeated at Ohio State has happened at just a four-percent clip over its 122 football seasons. Apparently that’s not rare enough, especially with Bill O’Brien winning eight games at Penn State – which obviously benefited from having a functioning head coach and no staff nepotism for the first time in about ten years.” [Ramzy/Eleven Warriors] —- Tweet of the night from Vinnie Pestano- “Now who the hell am I supposed to play catch with tomorrow? #17inyourprograms1inyourhearts” [@VinnieP52]
