Former South Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was found guilty on 31 of 32 counts, including his involvement in just under a dozen murders, in court on Monday, ensuring that the infamous gangster will die in prison. But one of the wackiest pieces of news to come out of Bulger’s case is his insistence on retaining a Stanley Cup ring that was given to him a number of years ago. The ring was found along with $822,000 in cash, guns, knives in Bulger’s Los Angeles apartment at the time of his arrest in 2011. The Boston Globe reports: It wasn’t clear who gave Bulger the ring. Bulger paid for the wedding of NHL player Chris Nilan, who won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens, to Karen Stanley, daughter of Bulger’s late girlfriend Teresa Stanley. Nilan and Karen Stanley are now divorced. It’s not clear if Bulger will ultimately get to keep the ring. The government has agreed not to pursue the ring at this stage of the case — the criminal forfeiture stage — because the ring can’t be shown to be part of Bulger’s criminal profits. Understandable that Bulger really doesn’t want to lose possession of his friend Nilan’s Cup ring (if it is really Nilan’s) but I’m curious to see find out how likely it is that he actually does get it back. I mean, it’s not like he’ll be able to wear it around in prison. Plus, if Bulger was the Boston Bruins fan that he claimed to be, he shouldn’t even be in possession of a Montreal Canadiens ring in the first place. The post Whitey Bulger will die in prison, but he still wants his Stanley Cup ring back appeared first on The Nosebleeds.
