Google barely knows who Mauro Gomez is. See that picture? It was the only real one I could find of the guy who is starting at third base tonight for the Boston Red Sox in their most important series of the year. Isn’t that great? Mauro ******* Gomez is getting the call – because really, who else would you want out there in a big spot?

So seriously, who is Mauro Gomez? He’s playing for the injured Will Middlebrooks, and from what I can gather based on extensive 10-minute research, he’s from the Dominican Republic, was signed by the Rangers in 2003 at the tender age of 19, played in the Braves organization and didn’t make it to the big leagues until this season. He’s played in three games already for the Sox, he’s 1-for-6 and even he can’t believe that he’s starting at third base for the Boston Red Sox.

On baseball-reference.com, where they list the positions, the first one of Gomez’s is “pinch hitter.” That’s right – he’s a minor league pinch hitter. I’m glad he found his niche.

He’s actually been kind of a stud in the minors for the last four seasons, but he was playing at Single-A and Double-A for the majority of the time. It’s hard to argue with his performance at Pawtucket this year though – .311 batting average, 19 home runs (or, in laymen’s terms, 13 more than Adrian Gonzalez) and 55 RBI with an OPS just under 1.000. Pretty good stuff for a guy that nobody knew existed.

And that’s it. That is all the information in the world available to the public about Mauro Gomez. Now we know we the team traded Kevin Youkilis – to make room for Mauro Gomez.

My only regret is that he won’t be available to pinch hit tonight.
