213 Miles From Shea:
Yesterday the Mets dropped a game to 7-5 to the Miami Marlins. Before we talk about the OF performance, let’s just go through some quick game notes.
- Mejia had a bad outing allowed 5 runs, 4 earned in one inning of work. I would be more concerned about this but he also just got to camp, so he could easily be 2 weeks behind everyone else. I would also be more apathetic about this if Santana’s arm wasn’t in question.
- Turner, Satin, d’Arnaud and Tovar all had RBI singles (except for d’Arnaud, who had a sac fly). Which is nice for timely hitting but the entire team had only one extra base hit via Omar.
Really nothing to write home about. Kirk struggled going o-3, 2 K’s, Hoffman went 0-2, Baxter went 0-3, and Lagares went 0-4. Puello had the only hit going 1-2 with a run scored. I updated the spread sheet that keeps track of everyone’s performance in the OF + Valdespin and the Michigan game:

JUPITER, Fla. Several Miami Marlins headed to the clubhouse Tuesday morning by walking between a cluster of microphones, several video cameras and a group of reporters.
Is Obama coming? outfielder Bryan Petersen asked.
No. Media members were waiting for someone who actually had been more elusive than the president during the previous four months Jeffrey Loria.
The Marlins owner...
Javier Vazquez will not pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Agent Seth Levinson said Thursday that the 36-year-old right-hander had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Levinson says Vazquez still plans to travel with the team, which plays the Dominican Republic, Spain and Venezuela in Group C starting March 7.
Vazquez last pitched in the major...
Javier Vazquez’s comeback attempt may be over. After undergoing knee surgery last month the 36-year-old right handed pitcher has been ruled out of the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Vazquez was to play for Puerto Rico. Vazquez was trying to make a comeback this spring after sitting out the entire 2012 season.
Contrary to popular belief, most writers covering sports do not enjoy writing articles month after month, year after year, in which they report nothing but negativity around this facet or that. In all honesty, it’s tiresome.
At the same time, those of us that spend a great deal of time watching over teams, clubs, and leagues, are passionate and actively engaged in wanting to see...
Former Marlins, Yankees, and Braves starter Javier Vazquez will not pitch in the World Baseball Classic in March, and won't make a return to MLB this season. Vazquez had knee surgery in January, and that's the reason for him pulling out of the WBC as well as putting off plans to return to the majros in 2013.
Despite impressing scouts in workouts this spring, it's...
There was a time when Tino Martinez was certain that he would never coach.
It's not that he didn't want to, necessarily. It was more that the grind of baseball - travel, long days, late nights, time away from the family - had taken its toll over the course of 16 seasons in the major leagues.
''I said, `Never again,''' Martinez said. ''When I...
The Miami Marlins hit three home runs including a grand slam on Tuesday to beat the New York Mets 7-5 and move to 2-1-1 on the Spring. The slam came courtesy of Casey Kotchman who is trying to land a role at first base to begin the year. Giancarlo Stanton and and Matt Downs hit their first long-balls of the Spring. Downs is also involved in the first base competition...
A cluster of media stood outside the Miami Marlins clubhouse,
awaiting the arrival of owner Jeffrey Loria, when outfielder Bryan
Petersen walked past.
Apparently not yet satisfied with the public shaming he received after his full page "explanation" ad in a local paper, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has now gone straight to the press to explain himself further. As you might expect, it didn't go well.
In a progressively contentious 25-minute interview with the Miami Herald Loria proved that he is the arrogant, clueless...
VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Dan Haren allowed a run over two sharp innings in his debut with the Washington Nationals, but the Nathan Eovaldi pitched two hitless innings in his first start to lead the Miami Marlins to a 5-1 victory on Wednesday.
NL Rookie of the Year Bryce Harper cooled off some, going 0 for 2 for the Nationals. He had three hits Tuesday and is 6 for 10 to start spring...
Free agent Javier Vazquez was hoping to return to the major
league ranks this season, but his comeback attempt has been cut short due to a
knee injury. The veteran right-hander will not pitch in 2013 as he recovers
from meniscus surgery on his right knee, according to James Wagner of The
Wagner adds that a retirement announcement could come soon
Jeffrey Loria and the Marlins front office need to save face as much as anyone since Harvey Dent (dated pop culture reference: check). One suggestion has been that they should re-sign their one remaining superstar, Giancarlo Stanton. That is easier said than done, given that Stanton publicly expressed displeasure in the immediate wake of the team’s massive trade with Toronto. Even...
