Devastating injuries are a part of sports, but when that injury is completely preventable it’s even worse. I’m talking of course about Nerlens Noel, the Kentucky Wildcats’ superstar center who never should have been. When players become superstars in college, we never seem to question the NBA’s policy towards draft eligibility, where a player must be a year removed from his high school’s graduating class, or at least 19 years old if from overseas. It takes moments like this for us to bring up the debate once more: why shouldn’t athletes take their talents straight to the pros if they’re in demand? The rule was implemented by the NBA in its CBA back in 2005, and it’s been a laughingstock ever since. It was and still is seen as both a sop to the collegiate game and to protect NBA teams from themselves, making sure they receive an athlete with a “brand” and a somewhat established game.
