TEAMS:
Boston Red Sox
The surprise of the Winter Meetings for me has been the Red Sox. Mainly, this is not the direction I thought they would go.
In the middle of last season, the Red Sox were able to dump all of their bad contracts with the exception of Lackey to the Dodgers. This gave Boston back financial freedom for this year to sign some hitters and maybe a pitcher. Instead the Dodgers have done this:
- Signed Ross (the Catcher, not the OF)
- Signed Napoli to a 3 year, 39 million deal
- Signed Victorino to a 3 year, 39 million deal
Ross is on this list because in the whole picture, he doesn’t make sense. If the Red Sox were going to go hard for Napoli, and they already had Salty, why would they sign another catcher? When they signed Ross, Salty looked expendable, now it looks like they will have to deal Salty because the roster is redundant. 39 million is also a lot of money for Napoli, it’s another bad contract. The contract’s redeeming quality comes from a “there are not a lot of catchers on the m...

Shane Victorino and Platoon Panic
We have already run two pieces on Shane Victorino since he signed his new contract with Boston by Eno here and by Michael Barr at RotoGraphs. They are both fine pieces in their own right, but one issue that needs more discussion is Victorino’s platoon split.
As people noted elsewhere in the signing’s aftermath (and analyzed in some detail earlier this season by Jack Moore),...
MLB Rumors: Will Boston Red Sox Trade Jacoby Ellsbury To Philadelphia Phillies For Cliff Lee?
The Boston Red Sox will trade Jacoby Ellsbury after signing Shane Victorino to a three year contract worth $39 million. That is the new trendy deal with Boston, having already signed Mike Napoli to the same contract. Now, while the Red Sox are saying that Victorino will likely play right field in 2013 while Ellsbury enters his final year of his contract with the Red Sox, it is now...
Fantasy Impact: Mike Napoli Signs with Red SoxExperts say Napoli was made for Fenway, but is that really the case?
Boston’s offseason overhaul is underway. The Red Sox have agreed to terms with Mike Napoli on a three-year contract worth $39MM. At first glance it would appear that Napoli was made for Fenway. The right-handed, power-first pull hitter will enjoy bobbing balls off and over the Green Monster just over 300 feet away, and one would expect his power numbers and batting average to rise...
Your Morning Dump...where the Sox could capitalize on their catching surplus
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
The Mariners (who wanted to sign Napoli as a catcher), Mets, Yankees, White Sox and Dodgers, according to major league sources, are expected to be in the market for catchers. With Napoli and Ross now added to...
Report: Red Sox Open to Trading Jacoby Ellsbury, Signing Cody Ross to Play Right Field
The reported Shane Victorino signing may not mean the Red Sox are done signing free-agent oufielders.
The Red Sox could still trade Jacoby Ellsbury, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. If Ellsbury is moved, that would push Victorino to his more natural position — center field — and reopen the possibility of signing Cody Ross, Josh Hamilton, or another free agent right...
Red Sox Lose Two, Gain Three in MLB Rule 5 Draft
The MLB Rule 5 Draft closed out the 2012 Baseball Winter Meetings on Thursday and the Boston Red Sox came away losing two players but gaining three.
In the major league phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Red Sox lost RHP Josh Fields to the Houston Astros and RHP Ryan Pressly to the Minnesota Twins. They selected Jeff Kobernus a second baseman from the Washington Nationals. They then...
Red Sox Filling Holes at Winter Meetings, But Starting Pitching Remains Most Glaring Need
It’s clearly been a busy offseason for the Red Sox, and it’s not even Christmas. Yet, as they address their many glaring needs, the most glaring of all still stands out.
Sure, the Red Sox have added their power-hitting first baseman by agreeing to a three-year deal with Mike Napoli. They’ve also addressed the corner outfield situation by nabbing Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes...
Shane Victorino signs three year deal with Boston Red Sox
Another outfield bat is off the market, as Shane Victorino has signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. Victorino will apparently serve as the team's every day right fielder with newly signed Jonny Gomes taking a lion's share of the plate appearances in left.
The 32-year old was primed for a big payday this offseason, but offensive struggles took...
Vote: Which Free-Agent Hitter Should the Red Sox Target After Signing Mike Napoli?
The Red Sox’ offseason is steaming ahead full bore.
On Monday, the first day of the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Boston reportedly inked catcher and first baseman Mike Napoli to a three-year deal, not only plugging the team’s hole at first base, but also acquiring a player long desired by the franchise. Napoli immediately fills the first base and right-handed power void facing...

Mike Napoli is receiving a lot of praise for his decision to come to Boston for the next three years.

The Boston Globe‘s Peter Abraham applauded the signing, and ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian believes that with a couple more solid signings, the...

Mike Napoli Red Sox: What to Expect From Catcher’s Fantasy Value?
Can Napoli get a leg up in Boston? Photo courtesy of Aggie.
You never know just what to expect from Mike Napoli now that he’s signed with Boston.
If the Angels and Blue Jays knew he would have a .320 batting average with 30 homers and 75 RBI in 2011, they would not have traded him during the previous offseason within one week of each other.
If fantasy baseball players saw him hitting...
Red Sox sign Shane Victorino to three year deal worth $39 million
Shane Victorino is the latest free agent to sign with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox ranked at the bottom of the AL East last season and are out to make sure that does not happen again in 2013.
