Worst Super Bowl commercials ever

Worst Super Bowl commercials ever

This slideshow displays the 22 worst Super Bowl commercials of all time. Even though they aired during the biggest game in the NFL, and acquired some of the most sought-after airtime, let's just collectively refer to these ads as "money not well-spent."

GoDaddy - "Smart Meets Sexy"

GoDaddy - "Smart Meets Sexy"
GoDaddy via YouTube

In a theme that is prevalent throughout this slideshow, in 2013, GoDaddy went for the ad that would grab people's attention, even if that attention turned out to be not so positive. The lip-lock was uncomfortable by design, and fans took to the internet to voice their displeasure with the spot.

Salesgenie - "Chinese Pandas"

Commercials that play off ethnic stereotypes are a bad idea to begin with, but doing so for the biggest TV audience of the year is a recipe for disaster, backlash and an eventual mea culpa.

Groupon - "Tibet"

Reducing the struggles of an ancient culture to promote your brand is an idea that should have never gotten out of the gate to begin with.

LifeMinders.com - "The Worst Commercial"

This is the perfect example of when irony goes wrong and you accidentally just end up hitting the nail on the head with your lackluster Super Bowl ad.

Apple - "Lemmings"

Apple - "Lemmings"
Apple via YouTube

A year prior, Apple produced what many consider to be the greatest commercial of all time in the iconic "1984" ad. The follow-up, like many sequels, was a massive flop. 1985 was a particularly bad year for Apple, as shortly after this commercial aired, the company also decided to fire its founder Steve Jobs.

Dirt Devil - "Fred Astaire"

Note to all companies: Don't use footage of beloved dead celebrities to shill for your product.

SoBe - "Thrillicious"

SoBe - "Thrillicious"
SoBe via YouTube

All style, no substance. This minute-long ad tried to mix modern-day dancing with '80s nostalgia, but the final product was pretty much a train wreck of creative thinking.

GM - "Robot"

GM - "Robot"
GM via YouTube

A lighthearted take on unemployment, depression AND suicide? I can't believe this commercial from GM wasn't received better by an audience who just wanted to watch a football game on a Sunday night.

Holiday Inn - "Bob Johnson"

Comparing your product's renovation to that of a transgender woman and thinking that was an acceptable idea? The '90s were a different time ...

Miller Lite - "Evil Beaver"

Miller Lite - "Evil Beaver"

This ad wasn't so much bad as it was just truly bizarre, and it certainly didn't leave the audience wanting to go out to the store to pick up some Miller Lite.

AT&T - "Paul Reiser"

Repetition to the point of nausea is never the best strategy for getting the word out about your new brand initiatives.

Noxzema - "Cream Your Face"

Noxzema - "Cream Your Face"

This is the most famous example of using over-the-top sexual innuendo to get people talking and to buy your product.

Ameriquest - "Flight Accident"

Ameriquest - "Flight Accident"
Ameriquest via YouTube

Another example of a company looking to make its mark with a raunchy spot but forgetting that a good chunk of the Super Bowl audience includes young fans watching the Super Bowl at home with their families.

Outpost.com - "Gerbil Cannon"

Because you want your company forever associated with firing poor, defenseless gerbils out of a cannon straight into a wall.

Wait, what was that all for again? A razor?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play - "Thumbs"

There has to be a better way to sell phones than by grossing out your audience with the sight of dismembered thumbs.

Cash4Gold - "MC Hammer and Ed McMahon"

Cash4Gold - "MC Hammer and Ed McMahon"

Celebrities poking fun at themselves is a time-honored tradition in commercials, but casting a spotlight on the financial troubles of these two just seemed exploitative.

GoDaddy - "Too Hot for TV"

GoDaddy - "Too Hot for TV"
GoDaddy via YouTube

GoDaddy knows how to get people talking about its ads around the water cooler, which I guess is the point. But the family-friendly Super Bowl audience saw this as shock value and nothing else.

Bud Light - "Classroom"

Bud Light - "Classroom"

Dear companies advertising at the Super Bowl, please repeat after me: I will not use racial and ethnic stereotypes to sell my product. I will not use racial and ethnic stereotypes to sell my product. I will not use racial and ethnic stereoty ...

Just For Feet - "Kenya Mission"

Just For Feet via YouTube

How bad was this commercial? Just For Feet sued the advertising agency responsible for it when the spot garnered serious backlash after airing at the 1999 Super Bowl.

Chatter.com - "Will.i.am"

Chatter.com - "Will.i.am"
Chatter.com via YouTube

This is proof that you can't just throw any familiar face (or even a CGI'd version of that famous face) into a spot and have it be a success.

Skittles - "The Portrait"

Skittles - "The Portrait"
Skittles via YouTube

There was nothing clever about Skittles utilizing a horrendous Steven Tyler Skittle portrait that attempted to mimic the Aerosmith front man's voice. It didn't help that Tyler himself was ridiculous in the ad as well, annoying viewers across the globe with this ill-advised commercial.
