At 2-3, and with more questions than answers in what is shaping up as a lost season, the Jets are reaching deep into their bag of tricks, attempting to draw some positive buzz for the last of their three-game homestand.
Case in point: the festivities they have planned for their tilt with the Colts.
Beat writer Manish Mehta reported Friday that WWE superstar John Cena has been named an honorary Jets captain and will lead the infamous J-E-T-S chant Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Interestingly, Cena is a native of Massachusetts and noted Patriots fan, so it’s fair to wonder what (or who) influenced the 35-year-old to put his allegiance on the line.
One off-hand guess points to owner Woody Johnson, who made headlines this week by reiterating his intention to keep Tim Tebow in the Big Apple. A businessman first and foremost, Johnson might be trying to appeal to a different demographic and put more butts back in the seats.
Whatever the case may be, this, to be frank, is another gimmick put together by a franchise that’s continually failing to shed its circus-like perception. With moves like these, they’re doing just the opposite.
