You Turn It Around On The Field.

Posted June 14, 2013

Two years ago the Philadelphia Eagles made huge free agent splashes. They got all the names, they made big trades, and they accumulated a whole lot of talent. They dubbed THEMSELVES THE DREAM TEAM. They were feeling themselves all training camp. Chomping at the bit to show us what they could do, and never stopped telling us how great they were going to be! Then they started playing and you could see early there were problems. Mike Vick looked completely lost in a PRESEASON game against the Steelers. He threw three interceptions. The season went to crap and the team won 8 games. 4 meaningless games at the end I will add. The next season (making much to do about those 4 meaningless wins the year prior) the Eagles were out to prove  that last season wasn't them. In fact they are so great they are on the precipitous of a meteoric rise to become a DYNASTY! Without saying it they said it. "We are the REDEMPTION TEAM!" Then they started to PLAY the games and once again reality set in. Vick couldn't even stay in for one preseason series! The offense in the regular season (once a dangerous weapon) averaged 16 points a game and had no clue of how to score in the Red Zone. Everyone wants to ASSume all the problems were "injury related", but the football team lacked the basic fundamentals of tacking and blocking. Funny they had so many coaches who were considered the best at what they did, but they had a team who couldn't tackle, couldn't block, took terrible penalties, and were worst in the league at protecting the football. So now Chip Kelly is in charge. Until Chip Kelly leads mean onto the field, and wins football games he wont quiet the critics. Since he will be judged by the performance of his football team he has every right to demand of them whatever he chooses. There is much teaching that is needed to be done. Again this team fails at the basics of football so there will be a learning curve. Chip has been saddled with a football team filled with players who feel they are entitled to something despite the fact they haven't won anything! He has to change the mentality of his players or replace those players with like minded individuals. Kelly was given a difficult hand there is no doubt about it, but in the end he will be judged by how his team performs on the field. Training camp can't get here soon enough!

  • Kelly has a huge mess to clean up. It's like they had a big party and when the lights were turned up everyone left him to clean up the mess alone. Since he's responsible for cleaning it up. It's best he do it his way. If that ruffles a few feather then good! Status quo has done nothing but make this team worse. There is a complete lack of fundamental football by all members of this team. They have to be brought through the basics, because the basics have been glanced over for the big flashy splash by the previous regime.
  • Too late, Eazy. He should have had it done by now. The first thing Kelly has to do is hand the football to Vick and hope he doesn't drop it or break a finger while grabbing it. Next cut Mathis, Jackson, Williams, Peters, McCoy and anyone else who either has disrespected the team or had a run in with the law. Kelly needs to show that he is the leader on this team and if it takes losing some of the most talented players doing just that than so be it! He may even want to fire one of the housekeepers or food vendors at the Linc just so everyone knows that no job related to the Eagles is safe. Everyone left will know that Kelly is a force to be reckoned with. Kelly really should have cut somebody at his press conference announcing his may have been a first in the NFL but I doubt the Eagles ship would be leaking this badly right now if he would have cut someone like McCoy right away...could have blamed it on his twitter war with his ex. I fear it's too late now.
  • Lol too funny!
  • Its one thing to make an example out of someone its another to get rid of every bit of talent you have. Just dicipline them should suffice. we dont need to go 0-16 to prove a point. Thats lunacy.
  • You call it lunacy but the actual definition of what I typed is called sarcasm, hollywood. It was a freakin' joke.
  • Green I think you have to cut wood a little slack. For some
people have a hard time understanding sarcasm when it's written rather than spoken. Which only comes to the
conclusion Wood truly believes all the crazy stuff he writes.
  • I think the situation Chip finds himself in as the new HC in Philly is similar to that of when President Obama first took office. Obama inherited a nation mired in one of the greatest clusterf*** in its history. In many ways, it still is. Reid has left this team in a total state of disarray like Bush left America. Naturally these problems will not be fixed overnight much less one year.
  • So you don't think Kelly is losing control of the team, GG?

  • I absolutely agree with you on this, and would also state
the people who wanted to blame the new president week one for all the problems are no different from the people who wish to criticize Chip Kelly when he hasn't even coached a game yet.
  • [not displayed: comment from locked account]
  • There is one key difference though. Unlike Obama, Chip has a FO that does want to see him succeed whereas Obama has been constantly stonewalled by Congress and the House.

Anyone who will stand in the way of this team's recovery must go. I'll be more than happy to let Vick walk. This team has been in need of an attitude adjustment for a long time now. And no, I'm not talking about John Cena's finisher.
  • Yes it's true. There is an entitlement problem with this team. They think they can win with just talent, and that why they have been embarrassed the past two season. They have forgotten what hard work is all about. If CHIP KELLY is the coach I think he can be he will not fold to a few malcontents who are afraid of a little work. Work is how you win in this league.
  • This is a vetera Eagle team. The window of opportunity is actually gonna begin to close in a few years. If you want a complete turnover of players this thing could take 5-10 years to revive.
  • First I don't think they need a complete turnover of players. They either need one of these quarterbacks on their roster to become an elite quarterback or they need to draft an elite quarterback. It will take 5 to 10 years if they keep dragging journeyman quarterbacks out there to play for them. They need an elite quarterback.
  • what ever it takes....
"was Rome built in a day?"
  • By the time this empire is built I will probably be watching from above.
  • You're good. You're a Ravens/Colts fan too so you got a championship or two under your belt. You're suffrage doesn't compare to fans who ONLY BLEED GREEN.
  • I wont comment about fanhood but it helps me differentiate between class and shi* organizations. I think you know the difference.
  • If you believe the Eagles are a sh#t organization then you are a fool for wanting to hang around in sh#t. That's the actions of a dummy and not a fan.
  • Anyone else see Deadspin's top 15 worst coaches of all-time? Funny that we had three on that list including Buddy Ryan. Just goes to show this team has had a history of bad ownership and just bad, bad decisions.
  • I saw it. I don't think we have that bad of a history. True we've had some lean years, but what NFL franchise hasn't?

I think we made the list so many times because we're an easy target. Too many coaches from one team and the fans there are likely to write letters or something.

Here in Philly, NO ONE is harder on our teams than the fans. (The national media has a field day pointing this out at LEAST once a year.) So outsiders know they can get away with trashing our teams, because we're highly unlikely to offer a defense; and may even throw fuel on the fire.

  • Outside of Philly Eagles thought of as:
"choke artists"- "cant win when it counts"
  • Inaccurate.

"The Eagles are the only NFL team to rank in the top five in attendance each of the past five years. They're always near the top of the list in merchandise sales, and they travel as well as any group of fans in the league."

  • My last response wasn't to pike up the Philly LOCAL fanbase; rather it was to point out that the TEAM is well thought of by people in other cities as well.

In any EAGLES game you see broadcast, the team is ALWAYS well represented in the stands. It's extremely hard to believe that there are 7 to 10 thousand people in every 60 thousand plus seat stadium, who travel to every game. More likely the Eagles have a healthy contingent of local fans in every NFL city. (Which rocks!)

FYI: I've been to BMore on a few occasions. I happen to KNOW that the Eagles are well repped down there too. In many ways BMore is Philly's smaller, cleaner, poorer little sister. With crabs. Tasty, tasty crabs. As cities we have more in common than we don't. Let's not foster an imaginary beef.
  • I know more than a few true Ravens fans who are season ticket holders and if they had any beef with an NFC East team it's not the Eagles. It's the Redskins.
  • How can you trust Hollywood to tell the truth about this subject when he can't even type the truth about what he and others have typed in the past?
  • Now See, top 5 in attendance , near the top in merchandise sales, and fans travel very well?
I see these despite what most blog about the eagles?
    These are real fans!
  • Eagles fans are the best fans in football. I'll put them up against any NFL teams.
  • Hollywood yes or no answer. Are the Eagles a Super Bowl contender right now with Mike Vick under center?
