By Chad Lykins – After voluntarily taking a redshirt for his freshman season, Marshall Plumlee enters the 2012-13 season as a much improved player than when he entered the Duke campus. After gaining valuable experience at the collegiate level practicing with his teammates on a consistent basis, he placed himself in line as the key center reserve. However, the wait to see that development from the youngest Plumlee brother will be prolonged. With the regular season set to begin on Friday, the Duke Blue Devils will be without their key low-post reserve in Plumlee, as he continues to heal from a stress fracture of his left 2nd metatarsal that he suffered in October during an individual workout. With the recent setback, that leaves the Blue Devils with one less player at their most crucial position this season as seniors Ryan Kelly and older brother Mason anchor the frontcourt. Until Plumlee returns, that will leave 6’7″ junior forward Josh Hairston and 6’8″ freshman forward Amile Jeffer...

A new Trio forms at Duke

DukeHokie split up the team into three separate classes – Freshmen/Redshirt freshmen, Sophomores/Juniors and Seniors and profiled each group before the season tips tonight. Here’s his look at the Sophomores/Juniors. By DukeHokie - When I was asked to write articles defining each class as a whole and not a sum of its parts, breaking down two of the classes was very easy...

Four fervent freshmen for Duke

By DukeHokie – It’s almost expected anymore at an elite basketball institution to have an incoming freshman who is on a short list of front runners for conference player of the year; occasionally even national POY.  This season, Duke doesn’t have that.  What Duke has this season are four newcomers (yes Marshall and Alex are newcomers) who have a chance to add something that...

2013 Duke Basketball player spotlight — Amile Jefferson

By Chad Lykins – In what was arguably one of the most anticipated decisions from the class of 2012, Duke fans breathed a gigantic sigh of relief when Amile Jefferson gave his pledge to head coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils in May. After prolonging his forthcoming decision for months, Jefferson finally came to his wits by joining Duke’s incoming freshmen class, including...

Georgia St.-Duke Preview

Mike Krzyzewski wants his latest Duke team to resemble some of its predecessors. He wants the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to play aggressive defense. He wants toughness, togetherness and passion at that end of the floor. Some of that was missing last year when their opponents had the ball - and among other things, that inability to consistently stop people helped lead to one of the...

2013 Duke Basketball player spotlight — Josh Hairston

When Josh Hairston arrived on Duke’s campus in the summer of 2010, he was 6’7″ tall and weighed 210 pounds. Not ready physically to play the power forward position and not skilled enough offensively to usurp Kyle Singler at the small forward spot, Hairston played only 165 minutes the entire season. The highlight of his freshman season was by the St. Louis game, where Hairston...

Blue Devils Pull Away After Ugly Start

Not often do you face a trap game in the first game of the season, but given how Duke played in their season opener against Georgia State it looked like the Blue Devils were in one. Duke played a sloppy first half of basketball, even by first game standards but were able to bounce back in the second both offensively and defensively to take care of business winning 74-55. Still...

Duke 74 Georgia State 55 Highlights

Duke rode 45.8% shooting from beyond the arc and a double-double from Mason Plumlee to a 19-point win over a pesky Georgia State team that threw multiple different zone looks to disrupt the Blue Devils’ offense. Tyler Thornton played perhaps the best game of his Duke career, shooting 4-7 from the floor for 13 points. DukeBluePlanet Top Plays Blue Devil Network Highlights ESPN Highlights

Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – College Basketball Tipoff Edition

“There are five fundamental qualities that make every team great: communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring and pride. I like to think of each as a separate finger on the fist. Duke relies on outside shooting to beat Georgia State 74-55

By Josh Evans – Well, it was not the predicted easy win. Actually, Duke was in a real dog fight for most of the first half before blowing the game open and getting up by double digits late in the first half. The game was much closer than it should have been, and if Duke plays this way Tuesday against Kentucky, the results will not be the same. There were a few positives, but many...

Duke Bye Week Anything But Uneventful

It may have been the Duke Football team’s bye week and the player may have the next two days off but it has been far from just a down week for the Blue Devils. Several news items came out of the week, perhaps most notably were some rewards and recognition that was handed out to several of the players.
