CSU still has two men’s basketball scholarships it’s looking to fill for next season, but the Rams got a jump on their 2015 recruiting class Monday with an early pledge. Anthony Bonner, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Lawrence, Kansas, told The Coloradoan on Monday that he made his verbal commitment to Colorado State University following his weekend visit to Fort Collins. He’s the first player CSU has on board for 2015. “What I liked most about CSU was the people. The campus setting was great, so was Old Town, but they all seemed like genuinely good people who wanted to be around me and I want to be around them,” Bonner said. “The opportunity I’ll have as a freshman to show my skills and hopefully get in the rotation early is great. “Coach (Larry) Eustachy has been successful everywhere he’s been, and I want to help him with his success at the university.” Rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com, Bonner averaged 16.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for Lawrence High as a junior last season and shot 49 percent from the field. He can be deadly from long range — shooting 42 percent from behind the 3-point line — and was 84 percent at the free-throw line, but Bonner says he can do more than score. While at Lawrence High he’s a shooting guard, he plays the point for AAU Team YOBO and thinks he’ll have a chance to be the Rams’ starter at that position. Current CSU point guard Jon Octeus is heading into his senior season in 2014-15 and his expected backup, John Gillon, will be a junior by the time Bonner arrives on campus.
