After Kevin Ware’s horrific leg injury, Adidas has decided that they are going to sell the shirt above for $24.99. As it may seem like a nice gesture on the surface, you may want to look more into what actually is going on here.  Adidas is going to make loads of money off of all the sympathy that Kevin Ware is getting while Ware himself will get no money whatsoever.  This is sort of like how the NCAA can make money off of jerseys of college athletes as long as it doesn’t say the name on the back of it.  If it doesn’t say their name directly, then they don’t have to pay a licensing fee to the player. Adidas does state that a portion of their profits will go toward Louisville’s scholarship fund, but U of L has already waived all the royalties they would get off of the product.  Which just means that Adidas gets to pocket more money in the end. It definitely doesn’t surprise anyone that Adidas made the shirts and are selling them.  Plus, it is not like they are doing anything illegal.  But you have to figure how much Kevin Ware could be making off of this if it weren’t for the idiotic rules that the NCAA has in place regarding their “student-athletes”. In the end you just have to accept that the NCAA and their corporate partners can get rich off of the “student-athletes” but the actual “student-athlete” himself cant get rich off of his own doing.  Is there anything that screams hypocrite more than this?  Doubtful.
