KANSAS CITY, MO - MARCH 11: Head coach Bill Self of the Kansas Jayhawks looks on while taking on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the first half during the quarterfinals of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament at the Sprint Center on March 11, 2010 in Kansas City, Missouri. In perhaps the final article I may aver write about Andrew Wiggins, he has decided to play his college basketball for Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks. Wiggins chose Kansas in front of friends, family, and classmates without doing a press conference. Only a local media member was allowed into the ceremony, and he tweeted the play-by-play. In the end, Wiggins chose Kansas over Florida State. Kansas became Wiggins’ “school other than FSU” to go to after Julius Randle committed to Kentucky. On Wiggins official visit to Kansas, he told the coaches he would join Randle in Lawrence if he committed to KU. Obviously that didn’t happen, but Wiggins chose his own path instead of following where his parents went to school. First of all, congratulations to Andrew Wiggins and the rest of the 2013 class for making one of the most important decisions in your lives. Good luck to each and every one of these young players as they start their life after high school. Now I want to focus on the aftershocks. The announcement seemed to shock the majority of people that followed Wiggins’ recruitment process. Florida State was the popular choice, with Kansas as a darkhorse. The Jayhawks and Tar Heels were pretty late to the party compared to Kentucky and Florida State. If you’re a Kansas fan, you are probably still celebrating the fact you just landed the #1 player in the 2013 class. If you are fans of Kentucky, North Carolina, and Florida State, you will have a range of emotions. For those select few that like to hop on social media and slander the name of a recruit because he didn’t choose your school, please go play in traffic. Do not be that person that slams and demeans an 18-year-old kid for making a decision you don’t like. I understand your passion, but temper yourself and have some class. Not only do you hurt your favored university in recruiting, but in the national scene when you behave in such a demonstrative manner. Why didn’t Kentucky land Andrew Wiggins? The speculation could swirl for another couple of months about the reasons why John Calipari misses on a top recruit. Haters will say Coach Cal didn’t pay him enough. Please, go play in traffic too. The already loaded class coming to Lexington could have made room for Wiggins, but I’m not sure he had a good feeling about some of the UK commits. Recently posted on Twitter was a video from the “vine” application with the Harrison twins and a friend of theirs in the backseat of a car. I’m not sure why the “vine” was made, but the friend in the backseat of a car started an uproar. This friend decides to yell “F*ck Andrew Wiggins”. The matter was quickly cleaned up on Twitter with the twins saying neither of them said those words. Reportedly, Wiggins saw this video and was not happy with the outcome. The “vine” has since been deleted. The relationships between Wiggins and the other UK commits may have been questionable at best, leading to chemistry issues. Other factors are always there, and there’s no need to speculate on anything else. The deal is done. While you may be sulking in your sorrows, please pick yourself back up and think about what you have to look forward to. Kentucky still has the #1 ranked recruiting class (possibly of all-time). On paper, Kentucky is in a class of their own when it comes to their talent versus the rest of college basketball. Kentucky will win next year, and will win a lot. The ‘Cats will have Alex Poythress and James Young to fill the three spot that Andrew Wiggins would have occupied. Poythress looks to have a breakout sophomore season. Remember Terrence Jones? The BBN will fall in love with James Young. He’s a silky smooth lefty with a better 3-point shot than Wiggins. The Kentucky Wildcats can, and will move on without Wiggins. There is an embarrassment of riches committed to playing basketball in Lexington and the state of Kentucky in general. Let’s refocus on our guys, and remember the ultimate goal. We’ve gotta get #9.
