Another transfer to know for Nebraska basketball, plus more Cornhuskers news

Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg is going to have a busy offseason, maybe busier than expected as he’s dealt with the mass exodus of his roster.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have now lost eight of their 12 players from last season’s men’s basketball team as Matar Diop entered the transfer portal on Tuesday night. Nebraska basketball now has seven open scholarships to work with.

That is assuming Rienk Mast, Juwan Gary, and Brice Williams are back. Ahron Ulis should also be back on scholarship and Sam Hoiberg will be back too, although he was a walk-on last season. You also have two incoming freshmen.

Outside of that, Nebraska basketball will look much different. Different doesn’t mean worse though. Hoiberg has been active in the transfer portal. The Huskers hosted William Kyle III on Monday and performed an in-home visit with Andrew Morgan of North Dakota State.

Robin Washut of Husker Online also reports an in-home visit with Bradley sharpshooter Connor Hickman. The 6-foot-3 guard from Bradley, where Rienk Mast played before Nebraska, would be an ideal fit to replace Keisei Tominaga. He’s a high-volume 3-point shooter and made 2.4 triples per game last season while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Hickman is a career 37 percent 3-point shooter and has made 158 in his career. Last season, he also averaged 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.2 steals. He’s got one season of eligibility remaining but if Hickman joined the Huskers that would be a good sign that Mast will return too. He could play the one or the two and would add some much-needed playmaking/3-point shooting to the backcourt.

Nebraska baseball falls to Creighton

The Nebraska baseball team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night following a 5-3 loss to Creighton. Will Walsh got the start for the Huskers but was pulled after two innings and hit with the loss as the Blue Jays built a 5-0 lead.

Nebraska tried to rally. Cole Evans doubled in a run in the sixth inning. Riley Silva drove in a run in the seventh in addition to notching two hits, but it was too little too late. Nebraska baseball is now 20-6 on the season. The Nebraska Cornhuskers will host Ohio State for a three-game series at home starting Friday. The first pitch will go out at 6:05 PM CST on BTN+.

Nebraska Cornhuskers softball with another win

The Nebraska softball team won their sixth straight game with a 4-0 shutout over Kansas Tuesday. Billie Andrews belted a home run while Brooke Andrews went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Samantha Bland also had a perfect day at the dish, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Emmerson Cope also worked with Kaylin Kinney for a six-hit shutout of the Jayhawks. Cope got the win in the circle.

Nebraska softball is now 22-13 on the season and will host Penn State for a three-game series starting on Friday at 5:30 CST. All three games will be on BTN+.
