Duke went undefeated over a three-game stretch in the Bahamas behind tournament MVP Quinn Cook and the consistent play of their senior leader Mason Plumlee. They faced a variety of defenses as well; Minnesota’s man pressure, VCU’s “Havoc” full court press and Louisville’s passive full court press combined with extended on-ball D. So, how was Duke able to adjust their offensive games on the fly so quickly? Well, besides the fact that Mike Krzyzewski is one of the best coaches in the game of basketball at making adjustments between games, the Blue Devils are a multi-dimensional team this season. Each of Duke’s wing scorers has the ability to not only put up points from behind the arc, but can penetrate by their defender and score around the basket as well. Let’s look at each game individually through the eyes of the Four Factors to see what the team did well. Duke 89 Minnesota 71 I’ll be completely honest here. I wasn’t able to see this game as it was on AXS.TV (whatever the hell that...

Duke's Mason Plumlee flushes alley-oop dunk

I am loathe to ever write anything positive about Duke basketball, but credit needs to be given where it’s due. On Wednesday night senior Mason Plumlee took an alley-oop pass from sophomore guard Quinn Cook and threw it down with authority. The above video shows just how insane a dunk it was. I mean wow. No. 2 Duke ended up beating No. 4 Ohio State 73-68, and Plumlee’s dunk was...

Emerging Cook adds element to dangerous Duke attack

(Credit: Jon Gardiner, Duke Photography) Seth Curry led Duke with 2.4 assists per game last season.  That’s a pretty modest average to lead any college team.  For a team often called Point Guard U, that almost defies comprehension.  That’s the lowest average to lead Duke in, well, forever, or at least since assists became an official stat. That’s not a knock on Curry, a...

Duke winning, but still has room to grow

DURHAM, NC -- Mason Plumlee is having fun these days. The 6-foot-10 Duke center has always enjoyed playing basketball, but his final season in college recently began, and the Blue Devils have easily collected the most impressive victories of the young season to date. And Plumlee is ecstatic. In the last two weeks, Duke has beaten two No. 2 teams in Kentucky and Louisville on neutral...

Duke valiant in come from behind victory over Ohio State, 73-68

By Chad Lykins – A year removed from a 22-point defeat at the hands of Ohio State, the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils had this season’s rematch heavily circled on this season’s calender. Trailing for the majority of the contest, Duke was able to rally behind much improved play from their backcourt in the second half, another double-double performance from Mason Plumlee and two key...

Duke 73 Ohio State 68 Highlights

What a night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Up to 700 students camped out for the matchup with 4th-ranked Ohio State and the building was absolutely electric. When people talk about the mystique of Cameron Indoor Stadium, last night’s environment is exactly what they’re referring to. The teams on the court didn’t disappoint. Between high flying dunks from Mason Plumlee and intense...

Duke Morning F.I.S.T. – Beat Buckeyes Edition

By Duke Of Hoops – The Blue Devils have a chance to truly cement their position in the college basketball world tonight in Cameron at 9:30 against Ohio State. Watching UNC go down in flames last night makes it look like this year could shape up almost as fun as the 2010 season did. Duke Of Hoops found some links tackling both those topics and more below. Duke’s Quinn Cook, Virginia...

ACC/Big 10 Challenge Round 2: ACC 4, Big 10 2

MASON PLUMLEE (Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)With four wins last night the ACC brought the annual challenge to a stalemate with an overall tally of 6-6 thus avoiding the dreaded MARYLAND vs. Maryland tie breaker game.“That’s a relief,” said Terps coach Mark Sturgeon, “We don’t match up very well against ourselves and depth is really a problem.”While it’s too early in...

Big Ten/ACC Challenge ends in tie as Duke beats OSU, MSU upset

Duke seeking revenge against Ohio State tonight

By Ray Horn –  The Duke Blue Devils will be looking for revenge when they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  The Blue Devils were embarrassed last year in the Challenge against the Buckeyes, losing 85-63.  Just like last year when they won in Maui, the Blue Devils won another preseason tournament this time in Atlantis.  The seniors continued...
