Win number 2 for the Cincinnati Bearcats was not a pretty one in a 73-59 win over Jacksonville State. The Bearcats built up a 23 point first half lead based on going 7-9 from deep. They shot better than 50% in the half as well. The second half was a different story. It's like the Bearcats assumed Jacksonville State would be fine with being down huge, and played like the rest was academic. UC went 6 minutes wtihout a field goal, watching the lead go from 48-21 to 49-36. The Bearcats were able to boost the lead to 15-18 until after the final media timeout, when JSU cut the lead to 10.

Cashmere Wright scored 23 points overall, 16 in the second half, to lead the game in scoring. He added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Dion Dixon, my best friend, poured in 20 thanks to a 16 point first half. He added 9 boards, 2 steals and 2 blocks. The bugaboo between the pair were poor perimeter defense and turnovers. They turned the ball over 10 times, which was half of the UC total, and couldn't stop Brian Williams or Mason Leggett, who both had 16.

Yancy Gates and Justin Jackson both had 9 boards.  Jackson had 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks, while Gates had 4 assists and 2 blocks with his 8 points. Gates made the flashiest play of the game at the end of the first half, getting a board, bringing the ball up, going behind the back and pulling up for a 3 to close the first half. Gates was only 3-10 from the field, while Jackson fouled out. Sean Kilpatrick scored 9, but only took 3 FG attempts. Jermaine Sanders had 6 points and looked impressive at times.

Overall, not really a win to hang your hat on. Last season in the second or 3rd game, UC let IPFW come back on them late. Early season motivation is an issue for these guys I suppose.  This team is too talented to let a time like Jacksonville St hang around on them though. This kind of effort won't fly when teams with talent step on the floor with UC. Mick Cronin said as much after the game. Oh well, a win is a win. More tomorrow.

Box score via ESPN. Don't worry about the starters/bench. It's wrong. Stats are right though.
