KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jeff Withey matched a career high with 25 points, Travis Releford added 23 and No. 12 Kansas held off Saint Louis 73-59 on Tuesday night to win the CBE Classic. Releford had 21 points in the first half, and Withey had 15 in the second, the inside-outside duo carrying the Jayhawks (4-1) despite every effort by the Billikens (2-2) and senior forward Cody Ellis to get back into the game in the waning minutes of the second half. The Jayhawks improved to 16-4 all-time at the Sprint Center, the site of this season's Big 12 tournament, and where they'll play Oregon State in a nonconference game next week. Ellis finished with 19 points for the Billikens. Mike McCall Jr. added 13 points, Cory Remekun had 10 points and Dwayne Evans pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. The Jayhawks got off to the same kind of start they had the previous night, when they buried Washington State under a 21-5 onslaught. Releford keyed it with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Elija...

KU's Withey shines as a 'closer' vs. Saint Louis

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Maybe with Jeff Withey, we've got this thing all wrong. Because he doesn't fly through the air like Ben McLemore or beat his chest like Elijah Johnson, we take him for granted. Because he doesn't flex his muscles for the cameras, because he doesn't have a shtick, we see only the flaws, a glass that's agonizingly half-empty. We miss so much....

Releford surprises with big night in win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- He's Bill Wyman. Travis Releford prefers to stand in the back, unnoticed, given a choice. He's there to hold down the backbeat, to blend into the shadows, to be heard as opposed to being seen. "I have to be aggressive," Releford, Kansas' 6-foot-6 senior wing man, said after his Jayhawks stomped Washington State, 78-41, in the semifinals...

Billikens take positives out of KU loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's easy to second-guess yourself after playing a perennial college basketball powerhouse like the Kansas Jayhawks, just ask Saint Louis head coach Jim Crews. As Crews spoke to reporters following the Billikens 73-59 loss to Kansas in the CBE Classic championship game, he couldn't help shoulder the burden of what went wrong. It's what coaches do...

No. 12 Jayhawks rout Washington State 78-41

Washington State allowed its game against Kansas to get out of hand so quickly Monday night that the Cougars were forced to start coming up with goals they could achieve. Like try to outscore the Jayhawks between timeouts, or over the course of the second half. They couldn't even achieve many of those the way Kansas was playing. Travis Releford had 17 points, Perry Ellis added...
