Today was media day for the American. That meant the release of the conference predictions and the all conference teams. As you could easily predict, the team that just won the national title and won the Big East last year was picked first. The two teams slated for the top 25 came in second and third. The Cincinnati Bearcats were picked to finish 4th. PRESEASON COACHES' POLL Rank  Team (First-Place Votes)  Pts. 1.  Louisville (9) *  81 2.  UConn (1)  69 3.  Memphis  68 4.  Cincinnati  58 5.  Temple  40 6.  SMU  39 7.  Houston  28 8.  USF  27 9.  UCF  24 10.  Rutgers  16 The margin between Cincinnati and second place UConn was 11 points. The margin between Cincinnati and 5th place Temple was 18 points. There is a clear hierarchy in the conference. It's something we knew already, but we saw it in action. It's going to be quite the battle at the top of this league, although Louisville is the clear runaway favorite. The conference looks to be dominated by top guard play. That showed up in the all conference teams. Louisville's Russ Smith was the preseason Player of the Year. He, Shabazz Napier of UConn and Memphis' Joe Jackson were all unanimous first team selections. Sean Kilpatrick was the 4th guard added to that mix. Yes, 4 of the 5 players on the first team were guards. The other was Louisville forward Chane Behanan. No Bearcats were selected for the second team, which isn't surprising at all. The conference Rookie of the Year was selected to be Keith Frazier of SMU. They are probably going to have that choice next year when Emmanuel Mudiay steps onto campus. Frazier wasn't the highest rated newcomer on rivals150, that would be Memphis forward Austin Nichols, but he was a top 20, 5 star recruit. 2013-14 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PRESEASON INDIVIDUAL HONORS Preseason Player of the Year  Russ Smith, G, Sr., Louisville    Preseason Rookie of the Year  Keith Frazier, G, Fr., SMU    Preseason All-Conference Teams  First Team  Sean Kilpatrick, G, Cincinnati  Shabazz Napier, G, UConn *  Chane Behanan, F, Louisville  Russ Smith, G, Louisville *  Joe Jackson, G, Memphis *    Second Team  Isaiah Sykes, G, UCF  Ryan Boatright, G, UConn  TaShawn Thomas, F, Houston  Montrezl Harrell, F, Louisville  Anthony Collins, G, USF  Victor Rudd, F, USF    * unanimous selection Here was the American blurb about Cincinnati. Cincinnati was fourth in the preseason poll with 58 points. The Bearcats look to make their fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance in 2014 as they return a pair of starters from last year's 22-12 squad. Guard Sean Kilpatrick, who earned all-conference honors in each of his first three seasons, averaged 17.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season and was selected to the Preseason All-Conference First Team. Congratulations to Sean Kilpatrick for the well deserved honor. We are very close to basketball season kicking off. I could not be happier. What about you, Killa?
