Derrick Nix and Michigan State might be parting ways after his arrest last weekend when police pulled over the Spartans center after he ran a red light.  Police gave the 270lb Nix numerous field sobriety tests, which he managed to fail each time.  Nix was cooperative with police after they pulled him over in a 2011 Dodge Charger. Wait, what?

This is where ears and eyes are going to open up.  Why did Derrick Nix have newer model Charger?  How does a college athlete that is from Detroit have that kinda car on campus?  The Charger isn’t an overly expensive car, but it certainly isn’t cheap for a kid from Detroit that doesn’t have a job.  The police report says that the car isn’t registered to Nix, but to a Barbara Pettway of Detroit.

While Tom Izzo and MSU deal with the fallout of Nix smoking marijuana and being in possession of it, which could lead to Nix’s eventual expulsion from the team, others from outside the MSU program are going to be scrambling to see what Nix’s connection is to Ms Pettway and the use of her vehicle.  This might be much ado about nothing, but keep in mind that Tom Izzo’s greatest Spartan recruit may never have been had it not been for a car accident that involved a Ford Explorer that was essentially gifted to Maurice Taylor. That night became the beginning of the end the Michigan program in the mid 90s.
