As someone who has been to ten University of Detroit Mercy home games this season, there was no doubt in my mind that Titans junior point guard Ray McCallum, Jr. was the best player in the Horizon League this year.  McCallum became the first player since former Titan guard Rashad Phillips in 2000-01 to earn both preseason and postseason Player of the Year. Junior led the Horizon League in scoring with 19.2 points per game, which ranked 22nd nationally.  While dropping 4.7 assists/game, good for second in the league, the 6’3″guard finished just outside the league’s top ten with 5.1 rebounds a game. McCallum was joined by senior teammate Nick Minnerath on the All-League first team.  Minnerath averaged 15.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the second place Titans. My take: My crystal ball is saying that Junior is going to jump to the NBA after his junior season concludes and he receives a mid to late first round guarantee from an NBA team.  Minnerath’s ability to play outside as a 6’9″ forward will translate into a solid professional career whether it be overseas or in the NBDL.  I’d love for Nick to find his way onto an NBA bench, but the numbers are stacked against him…as they have been for a while.  He shouldn’t be doubted. Here are the rest of the All-Horizon League teams and award winners: Player of the Year Ray McCallum, Detroit Newcomer of the Year Bryn Forbes, Cleveland State Defensive Player of the Year Damian Eargle, Youngstown State Sixth Man of the Year LaVonte Dority, Valparaiso Coach of the Year Billy Donlon, Wright State First Team All-Horizon League Ray McCallum, Jr., G………………………..
