DJs take over in OT as NC State advances

In Saturday's overtime period against Oakland, the DJs had Wolfpack fans falling in love with their tournament chances again.

DJ Burns scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds during North Carolina State’s 79-73 overtime victory over Oakland University. His teammate DJ Horne had only 11 points, but he played some of his best basketball in overtime as the Wolfpack advanced to an improbable Sweet Sixteen bid.

After Jack Gohlke sent the game to overtime with two late free throws, NC State’s set of DJs rocked the Golden Grizzlies in OT. The two DJs combined for 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the extra period, including a DJ-to-DJ connection.

After an Oakland score, Burns turned the tables on the Golden Grizzlies. He grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a put-back to give the Wolfpack a lead they’d never relinquish.

Horne then stole the ball — technically it’s “sampling” when a DJ does it — and hit a jumper to extend the lead. Both DJs dropped in free throws to preserve the lead late and keep NC State’s Cinderella music playing for another weekend.

Unfortunately, Oakland only had a DQ, their junior guard DQ Cole. He stole the ball from DJ Burns and later got the ball stolen from him by DJ Horne. But he scored his only points of the game on a three-pointer with 14 seconds left and his team down nine.

The DJs are headed to the VIP area of the Sweet Sixteen, where they’ll Big Dance like it’s the last night of their lives.

As for Oakland, they’ve been DQ’ed.
