Creighton University looks to extend National Player of the Year candidate Doug McDermott’s historic career when the Bluejays battle Duke University late Sunday night in the so-called City of Brotherly Love. The McDermotts will be trying to give Duke another premature tournament exit on ‘Blue Sunday’ in Philly.(Image credit: Nati Harnik via ESPN.com) In 2012, a 28-5 Bluejays team — champions of the Missouri Valley Conference — felt they deserved better than a No. 8 seed.  When they faced a North Carolina squad at full strength (the only time the Tar Heels actually were during last season’s tournament), Creighton hung tough but fell 87-73 in essentially a UNC home game in Greensboro. McDermott watched his Ames, Iowa, high school teammate Harrison Barnes win the reunion match. When Creighton challenges a different ACC power from Tobacco Road, McDermott will face another acquaintance, Ryan Kelly. The two were roommates at Amare Stoudemire’s Skills Academy last June in Chicago. “I got

Duke needs to slow down McDermott to advance

Duke will never be a first-weekend tournament darling. There's no such thing as an upset - unless the Blue Devils are beat. The second-seeded Blue Devils (28-5) will try to avoid a second-straight early exit when they play seventh-seeded Creighton (28-7) on Sunday in the Midwest Regional. The Blue Devils haven't advanced past the round of 16 since coach Mike Krzyzewksi...

Creighton awaits the challenge of Cincinatti

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- All that was missing from Doug McDermott's highlight film was the swish. Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin had the sound on as he rolled the video on Creighton's All-American guard. His form, flawless. His shot, eerily quiet. That silent film made the Bearcats uneasy. Before Cronin could point out how the ball seemed to hit nothing but air, guard Cashmere...

Duke tops Creighton 66-50, advances to round of 16

Doug McDermott scuffled for open looks and usually missed when he did get them. He won't get another chance this season to make up for it with Creighton. Now, the question looms for McDermott if he'll play for the Bluejays again Rasheed Sulaimon scored 21 points, Seth Curry had 17 and the No. 2 seed Blue Devils beat seventh-seeded Creighton 66-50 on Sunday night to advance...

Cincinnati-Creighton Preview

All that was missing from Doug McDermott's highlight film was the swish. Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin had the sound on as he rolled the video on Creighton's All-American guard. His form, flawless. Coaches gripe about flagrant fouls

With just over a minute left in a six-point game, Creighton's Doug McDermott was swarmed by a pair of Cincinnati defenders. Trying to escape the trap, McDermott turned and swung his elbow upward, catching the Bearcats' Shaquille Thomas in the face. The officials called McDermott for a foul, then, in what has become a common practice during the NCAA tournament, headed over...

NCAA Tournament Live: Marshall Henderson’s Ole Miss, Doug McDermott’s Creighton Look to Make Noise on Second Day

8 a.m. ET: March Madness this time around is a little different than it has been in years past, with no clear-cut No. 1 team and few big-name players ready to etch themselves into NCAA Tournament lore. What’s so great about March Madness, though, is that even when the odds are stacked in one direction, anything can happen. Two players who have already grabbed some headlines before...

Bearcats can't catch Creighton, fall 67-63

With Cincinnati unable to get to the free-throw line, Shaquille Thomas took a trip the hard way. Creighton's Doug McDermott was double-teamed in the corner and swung his left elbow into Thomas' face to break free with 53 seconds left. McDermott was whistled for a flagrant foul and Thomas went to the line. Make both, and the Bearcats would trail by one. He clanked two instead...

Duke News & Notes, March 25th Edition

In the absence of a Morning Linkfest this morning, here is the Duke F.I.S.T. post from DukeHoopBlog.com.  Its a great morning update with a Duke focus. Duke is back to the Sweet 16 yet again after outlasting Creighton last night.  Duke had 3 players with 4 fouls before the under 16 timeout in the second half.  At that point, they had a 5-7 point lead and honestly, I thought the...

Creighton-Duke Preview

Duke will never be a first-weekend tournament darling. There's no such thing as an upset - unless the Blue Devils are beat. No high-fiving announcers and getting mobbed at press conferences like the kids at Florida Gulf Coast. No need to call the school's only active NBA alumn for instant reaction like at Harvard. Sure, putting the madness in March can be a blast. But...
