Ex-Gophers guard Jamal Masburn Jr. commits to Temple

Jamal Mashburn Jr. shocked most when he decided to leave longtime head coach Richard Pitino and enter the transfer portal on March 25, but he has officially found a new home in Philadelphia, playing for the Temple Owls.

The 6-foot combo guard followed Pitino from Minnesota to New Mexico when the Gophers made a coaching change during the 2021 offseason.

In his lone season in Dinkytown, he averaged 8.2 points per game and showed a lot of promise as a true freshman.

In three seasons for New Mexico, he was a three-time All-Mountain West performer, averaging 18.2 PPG as a sophomore, 19.1 PPG as a junior and 14.1 PPG last season as a senior.

After battling injuries throughout the year, he was still able to lead the Lobos to a Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013-14 but fell short to Clemson in the opening round.

He will now head to Temple and play for second-year head coach Adam Fisher. The Owls will likely build their roster around a player of Mashburn's caliber as they look to make noise in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

He will have one graduate transfer season left to play for Temple as they look to improve from their 16-20 record and AAC Tournament Championship loss from a season ago.
