(Photo: Five Star Basketball) The headliner of Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton’s most recent recruiting class, Xavier Rathan-Mayes, has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2013-14 season. Rathan-Mayes was ranked one of the top 50 players nationally and would have brought versatility to the guard position for Florida State. The Seminoles finished just 18-16 a season ago and were an early exit from the NIT after four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Florida State is losing its leading scorer from a year ago and one of the most clutch Seminoles ever in former McDonald’s All-American, Michael Snaer. The loss of Rathan-Mayes leaves Florida State extremely thin at the guard position. Rathan-Mayes has the ability to play either point or shooting guard and was expected to see a lot of the court as a freshman. With his suspension and the offseason transfer of Terry Whisnant, Florida State is left with just four scholarship guards: senior Ian Miller and sophomores Aaron Thomas, Devon Bookert and Montay Brandon. The 2013-14 schedule was also released on Monday. The Seminoles will open the season on November 8th at home against Jacksonville.
