Former Stanford Coach Johnny Dawkins Reaches 300 Career Wins
Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports

On Saturday, former Stanford basketball head coach Johnny Dawkins hit a major milestone.

His UCF Knights took down the No. 20 Oklahoma Sooners to move to 13-8 in their first year in the Big 12. The conference is so tightly contested that even with a 4-5 record in conference play, they are just two games out of first place.

However, the win meant a bit more for Dawkins than most, as it was a tremendous milestone for the coach. The win notched the 300th win of his coaching career, which started back in 2008 at Stanford.

When speaking to the media after the game, Dawkins revealed that it was more of a relief to get the big win out of the way.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Dawkins told the AP. “That can build up and put pressure on our guys. I want them to concentrate on what we’re trying to do as a team and the kind of season that we’re having and not get caught up in the number of wins for the coach they are playing for.”

Dawkins had been stuck at 299 since January 27, as the Knights lost to both Cincinnati and Baylor before reaching the mark on Saturday.

The Knights will take on No. 15 Texas Tech next Saturday looking to make it 301.

As for Dawkins, he has been in Orlando since being fired by Stanford back in 2016. The 2013-14 season which was when he was the head coach, was the last time Stanford has made it to the tournament. Dawkins' squad went all the way to the Sweet 16. While at UCF, he has a 144-95 record (.603) and has also taken them to one tournament appearance.
