George Mason at Maryland Date 12/2/2012 5:00:00 PMLocation BB&T ClassicLive StatsCheck At Gametime.TV None Team Stats Embed This Chart On Your WebsiteThe Terps take on George Mason in the 17th and perhaps last BB&T Classic today. I say last because Coach Turgeon indicated in an interview that this may be Maryland's finale in the local game. He points to the lack of attendance as one reason. Turgeon put words to an incredibly disturbing trend. Where are our fans? Comcast has been at best a half filled arena this season. It begs the question, has Maryland basketball lost its luster? Sure, there have been down years and the loss of a legendary coach hasn't helped but is anyone paying attention to what Turgeon has built over the last 15 months?
Maryland is one of if not the best rebounding team in the NCAA right now. That means Maryland will be in EVERY game. No matter how poorly they shoot, limiting opponents' second chance opportunities is one of the most fundamental aspects of defensive basketball. The Terps are also a good FT shooting team, another key element to being in every game.
In short, there will be lots of exciting games at Comcast this season. Maybe a neutral site game in the District against a mid-major is not exactly a hot ticket, but it is an important non-conference game. George Mason has an RPI of #58 (MD is #66). Mason is likely to be the Terps highest ranked non-conference win should we beat them. Basically, tomorrow's game is hugely important for our NCAA Tournament hopes and the stadium will be bereft of Terp fans.
What is it going to take to get Terp fans to show up to Comcast? When I was in school; you needed to donate $5K - $10K just for the opportunity to buy season tickets. Now? I could call the ticket office tomorrow and buy a season ticket package no questions asked. There is the potential for a special season in College Park. What a shame if there is no one in the stands to see it.
