MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The only reason Rodney Williams became an inside player for Minnesota was Trevor Mbakwe's torn-up knee. Playing together in the post for the first time in their college career, Mbakwe and Williams are turning into quite the pair for the 13th-ranked Gophers. Williams scored a season-high 19 points, including a 360-degree dunk off a fast break, and Mbakwe grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds in 21 minutes to lead Minnesota past North Dakota State 70-57 on Tuesday night. "Rodney's a threat because there's not many '4' men as athletic as him, with his skill set. There aren't many people as strong as Trev. It makes life easier for a point guard," a smiling Andre Hollins said. Hollins added 11 points for the Gophers (11-1), who have won 16 straight games in this series since losing in 1936. Mbakwe scored 14 points himself, and Bison coach Saul Phillips, at the podium for his postgame interview, joked that the sixth-year senior added ...

Gophers Mbakwe back near 100 percent

MINNEAPOLIS After his second put-back dunk of the night, Gophers senior Trevor Mbakwe let out a yell, as if to announce to the college basketball world that he is back. Minnesota fans have seen him do that plenty before, vocalizing his emotion after a big play. It's happened infrequently this year, though, as Mbakwe is still trying to work his way back from a torn ACL that...

Mbakwe plays above the rim in NDSU victory

Heading into a sizeable dearth of game activity in which they only play two games in two games in 20 days, the Gophers first made quick work of the North Dakota State Bison 70-57 in a sort-of-close-but-not-really victory at Williams Arena. Now finals week can commence and the players can focus on getting their schoolwork [...]

Freshman Ellenson could still make an impact

MINNEAPOLIS So much for that redshirt. Gophers freshman Wally Ellenson made his college basketball debut Tuesday, checking into the game against North Dakota State with 3:44 left in the second half. There was speculation that Ellenson would redshirt after breaking his hand in late October, but he's no longer eligible for a redshirt season since he played in Tuesday's 70...

Gophers comfortably beat USC, proving that untelevised west coast games count.

Yes, it turns out. Basketball games on the west coast that are unseen do in fact count. The Golden Gophers beat the mediocre at best USC Trojans in rather convincing fashion. Minnesota is the 2012-2013 champion of maroon and gold. How about that? Normally I'd try to provide some analysis of what happened. Since the closest I came to actually seeing the game was ESPN's game...

Up to #13, Gophers need to survive two more games to reach the top 10.

On their slow and deliberate march towards the top ten, the Golden Gophers have three obstacles in their way. The first two are North Dakota State and Lafayette. The third is finals week. Coming off their second true road win of the season, the team is in the enviable position of only needing to take care of business on the court and in the classroom. The hard part of the non-conference...

No upset for NDSU as No. 13 Minnesota wins 70-57

North Dakota State coach Saul Phillips realizes an upset of a top 25 team on the road requires just about every phase of the game to go well. The Bison didn't have nearly enough at 13th-ranked Minnesota. Rodney Williams scored a season-high 19 points, including a 360-degree dunk off a fast break, and Trevor Mbakwe grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds for the Gophers in a 70-57...
