Houston All-American G Jamal Shead sprains ankle vs. Duke
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Houston All-American point guard Jamal Shead "badly" sprained his right ankle during the first half of Friday's Sweet 16 game against Duke in the South Region game in Dallas.

The program said just before the start of the second half that X-rays were negative and that Shead would attempt to play at some point in the second half. Shead was on the bench as the second half began.

Shead was injured while driving for a layup that he missed with 6:53 left in the half. As he planted his right foot, he turned the ankle and he fell to the court and remained there as play went the other direction.

The officials stopped play with 6:38 left and the training staff rushed out to examine Shead. He was eventually helped off the floor without being able to put any weight on his right leg.

The Cougars led 16-10 when Shead departed and Duke immediately took advantage with a 13-4 burst to take the lead.

The Blue Devils led 23-22 at halftime.

Shead had two points on 1-of-5 shooting in 13 first-half minutes. He also had three assists and two steals.
