Illinois basketball has beaten a higher seed only twice in school history. They were a #5 seed when crushing the #4 seed Cincinnati Bearcats in 2004 (a moment chronicled on MTV’s reality show The Newlyweds, as Mr. Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey is a huge Cincy fan) and #9 over #8 UNLV in ’11. NCAA Tournament seeding is as old as I am, 35 years, and the Illinois basketball program remains without a true shocking upset win in March madness. Beating one seed higher is not a true upset. Illinois basketball had a lead in the final couple of minutes over #2 seed Miami today, but a questionable call in the final moments turned the tide. And the Hurricanes beat the Illini 63-59 to advance to the sweet 16 versus Marquette. Illinois basketball is 1-8 vs Top-2 seeds (only win: 1989 vs Syracuse when Illinois was a No. 1 seed). Illinois basketball was also a #1 seed in 2001 and 2005. We’ll have much more on this hotly debated call later.   Groce is the fourth-consecutive Illinois basketball coach to lead the program to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. He also is the fourth straight Illini head coach to win an NCAA Tournament game in his first season, and had that questionable call maybe gone the other way, he could have been the third straight coach to lead the Illini to the Sweet 16 in his first season. Shocking all of us so-called “experts” who believed Illinois basketball would get dominated inside by the Miami Hurricanes, the Illini won the rebounding margin 38-35. However, Illinois basketball has lived and died by the three all season long, and they shot just 26% from distance tonight. D.J. Richardson ended his career the worst way possible, going 1-11 from the field. Postgame reaction from coaches and players added and hour or so later Paul M.
