Illinois basketball has beaten a higher seed only twice in school history. They were a #5 seed when crushing the #4 seed Cincinnati Bearcats in 2004 (a moment chronicled on MTV’s reality show The Newlyweds, as Mr. Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey is a huge Cincy fan) and #9 over #8 UNLV in ’11. NCAA Tournament seeding is as old as I am, 35 years, and the Illinois basketball program remains without a true shocking upset win in March madness. Beating one seed higher is not a true upset. Illinois basketball had a lead in the final couple of minutes over #2 seed Miami today, but a questionable call in the final moments turned the tide. And the Hurricanes beat the Illini 63-59 to advance to the sweet 16 versus Marquette. Illinois basketball is 1-8 vs Top-2 seeds (only win: 1989 vs Syracuse when Illinois was a No. 1 seed).
