Iowa St.-Kansas Preview

Associated Press  |  Last updated January 12, 2012
Kansas made it a point to get the ball into the paint in its last game, and the Jayhawks came away with a lopsided victory. That doesn't bode well for an Iowa State team that was dominated inside the last time it took the court. The 10th-ranked Jayhawks look for their 13th straight win over the visiting Cyclones, who will be playing their second straight top-10 opponent Saturday. Kansas (13-3, 3-0 Big 12) made its first eight field goals inside after halftime Wednesday night at Texas Tech, and then star forward Thomas Robinson sank a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 30 points as the Jayhawks went on to win 81-46. "We got a lot of easy baskets because we didn't settle," coach Bill Self said after Kansas improved to 3-0 in Big 12 play for the sixth consecutive season. "First half I thought we settled a lot. In the second half I thought, you know we're so much better when we attack inside out, and we'll shoot it better when we attack inside out, and I thought we got the ball inside better in the second half either off the bounce or the pass." Robinson had game highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds while playing a season-low 19 minutes. He's the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double (17.6 points, 12.1 boards). "He's really turned into one of the most complete players in the country this year," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. "He's just a horse down low." Robinson now squares off with the conference's next-closest player to be averaging a double-double in Iowa State's Royce White, who scores 13.1 points and pulls down 9.1 boards per game. White had the sixth triple-double in a Big 12 game Saturday, going for 10 points, 10 assists and 18 rebounds in a 74-50 win at Texas A&M. The 6-foot-8 forward had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists Wednesday, but he was unhappy with his performance after the Cyclones (12-4, 2-1) were outscored 40-20 in the paint en route to a 76-69 loss to No. 9 Missouri. "I just didn't give the right effort," said White, who also had a season high-tying six turnovers and missed 6 of 8 free throws. "It was just an effort thing." White, a redshirt sophomore who sat out last season after enrolling - but not playing - at Minnesota in 2009-10, is eager to bounce back in his first trip to storied Allen Fieldhouse. "I'm excited to play in the game," he said. "Hopefully we go in there and take care of business the way we know how and get a win." The Cyclones' last victory over Kansas was 63-61 in overtime in Lawrence on Feb. 19, 2005. Iowa State hasn't faced top-10 opponents in back-to-back games since January 2005, when it lost 71-66 at home to No. 2 Kansas and 83-73 at sixth-ranked Oklahoma State.
