I got the opportunity to watch the University of Maryland Men's Basketball Team play three games over the past weekend. They defeated a highly ranked Michigan State team and they suffered two bad losses at the hands of Gonzaga and Georgetown. I have been following college basketball for close to thirty years. I understand the process of how players go from high school to college and onto the NBA. I have followed the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Pac Ten, SEC, Big 12 and the Atlantic 10. During this time the University of Maryland has been considered a top program. I'm not sure about that anymore. Gary Williams has been the coach of the Terrapins since 1989. I have been following Coach Williams since his days at Boston College when he coached Michael Adams in the Big East and then he moved onto Ohio State where he coached Jimmy Jackson in the Big Ten. He has been a head coach in division one basketball for nearly thirty years. Coming into this season he has a record of 604-343, he has been to, two final fours and he won a national championship in 2002. He is certainly a good coach, but I think he would be considered one of the greats if he were able to recruit better players. I have always questioned his ability to recruit. You would think coming off two final four appearances capped off by a national title that recruits would be standing in line to play for him. Not the case. Since he has been at Maryland, Williams has lost local Maryland recruits like Carmello Anthony, Rudy Gay, Keith Bogans and Josh Boone. At first I thought that Williams could not get the players because of his sideline antics. He yells and screams on the sideline and that can scare recruits away. I know I would rather play for someone who had more of a calm demeanor. I found out over the weekend that his coaching style is not a huge deterrent. One of the reasons that Williams does not snag a lot of the top players is because he does not like recruiting. Now, I did not interview Coach Williams nor did I hear or witness him say he did not like to recruit. Fran Fraschilla who was an assistant coach under Williams while he was at Ohio State mentioned it during the broadcast, so I am incline to believe him. My reason for calling Williams a bad recruiter is due to the fact that he let Maryland kids get away. Just in the past few years he has let Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Donte Green, Jeff Green and Nolan Smith leave the State of Maryland to play elsewhere. I know having a bunch of all-americans on your team does not guarantee your team a trip to the final four and I am not calling for Coach Williams to be fired, but if you keep letting big name recruits leave your state, it has to be questioned. Since winning the championship in 2002, Maryland has only reached the sweet 16 once and they have failed to make the tournament three out of the last four years. A school that was once a top-notch program seems to be steadily declining in power and there is really no excuse for that considering all of the basketball talent that comes out of the state of Maryland.
