Jahmir Young comes through late, lifts Maryland over Iowa
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Jahmir Young scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half and converted the tiebreaking layup with two seconds left as Maryland rallied for a 69-67 Big Ten Conference win over Iowa on Wednesday night in Iowa City, Iowa.

After the Hawkeyes' Tony Perkins connected on two free throws with 28 seconds remaining to even the score at 67, the Terrapins called timeout with 21 seconds on the clock to set up the final shot. They went to Young, who had scored their last six points, and he delivered the bucket that improved them to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Julian Reese added 17 points and nine rebounds for Maryland, which also got 14 points from Donta Scott. The Terrapins canned 54.2 percent of their shots from the floor in the second half and made 7 of 15 3-pointers for the game.

Perkins paced Iowa (11-8, 3-5 Big Ten) with 20 points, going 11-for-11 at the foul line. Owen Freeman added 14 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. The Hawkeyes cooled off drastically in the second half, hitting on just 9 of 27 attempts from the field.

Neither team got off to a hot start. The score seven minutes into the game was just 8-5 in favor of Iowa. The Hawkeyes were at least taking shots on most possessions, unlike the Terrapins, who mixed in three quick turnovers during the first four minutes.

Eventually, Iowa found a little bit of rhythm and managed to carve out a 24-14 lead with 6:20 left in the first half, as Freeman took a Dasonte Bowen pass and dunked. That was part of a 10-point half for Freeman.

Maryland was able to battle back late in the period and get itself back in the game. Scott made a layup with 38 seconds to go that got the visitors within 34-28 at the break.

The Terrapins ended the half with nine turnovers, but the Hawkeyes converted them into just six points.
