Kendall Marshall scouting report, PG North Carolina

K.M.’s Take: Kendall Marshall is the game. He’s that damn good. He’s the cerebral assassin. One of the most natural point guards to come out of college in a long time, Marshall knows how to lead, how to run an offense, and how to deal with a team of highly acclaimed players. North Carolina doesn’t recruit players who lack pedigree or confidence in their game, and Marshall was able to meld them into a single unit. When he was leading the Tar Heels, the team of underachievers finally started achieving to the level of it’s talent. When he went down in the NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels fell apart. Marshall understands pace and flow, can make all the passes, has good size, and has the savvy of a 8 year vet in the NBA with the ball. Clever is a great way to describe him. He can get to the basket and has solid range. Marshall will be able to pick up an NBA offense and command it instantly, and with that be gain the respect of any teammates he ends up playing with.

Downside: Marshall is not an NBA athlete by any stretch. He’s not very fast or strong or explosive. He lacks the physical tools to guard elite point guards, and can struggle to finish inside the arc. While this all sounds pretty terrible, his understanding of the game helps him overcome his shortcomings and makes him formidable in the NBA. Still, against the cream of the NBA crop, it’s hard to see how Marshall will match up.

Best Fit: Phoenix Suns (now that Nash is going to the Knicks), Utah Jazz (trading up), Orlando Magic

If your point guard is old, leaving, stinks, or anything like that, Marshall is the not the kind of player you can build around, but he’s the kind of player that can make the players you have better. There’s a lot to be said about that.

Best case: Andre Miller (yea, that’s the one everyone uses, but I defy anyone to do better)

Worse case: Beno Udric
