Illini freshman wing Kendrick Nunn was a consesnus national top 75 recruit. He’s important to talk about today, as this is the biggest day in Illini basketball recruiting in a whole generation. It’s been nicknamed Cliffmas, as we’ll get the Cliff Alexander decision in just a matter of hours. And then a new wrinkle was thrown in last night. Illini commit Quentin Snider who decommitted from Louisville failed to sign to his national letter of intent. Now there’s word he’s talking with UL again. YEESH! I bring up Kendrick Nunn again because he represents that Simeon to Illini pipeline. And that pipeline can give Illini Nation something warm and fuzzy to think about as they’re 1.) freaking out about Quentin Snider 2.) on pins and needles for Cliffmas. Kendrick Nunn, along with fellow Illini freshman Jaylon Tate, won four straight state titles, tying the IHSA record. Nunn played on the USA basketball that won a gold medal at the 2012 FIBA u17 World Championships. 13 minutes, 2 assists, but 3 TOs in the opener. D.J. Williams (the earliest commit in Simeon history) joins the tradition of Simeon to Illinois, including Illini all-time leading scorer, Deon Thomas. Obviously, Kendrick Nunn, Jaylon Tate, Nick Anderson, Ervin Small, Bryant Notree, Kevin Turner and Calvin Brock. What happened with Jabari Parker and Derrick Rose? Yeah, that sucked. Maybe I should not have brought that up. The 25 number is a special tradition between Simeon and Illinois. Inspired by the memory of Ben Wilson, only the best player on the Simeon Wolverines can wear it. And at Illinois, it has special meaning too. Kendrick Nunn is wearing it this year in Champaign. I asked Coach John Groce what he thought of Nunn’s performance. “Kendrick Nunn had some moments where he struggled defensively, I thought he played a little bit better defensively tonight. We’re going to do this thing by committee. We’re going to be a team that needs to do this by committee, they have to be an NBA all-star in their role. Period. As soon as one of them is not, with this team it’s not good enough, we need every body ready to go,” Groce said. Paul M. Banks is the owner of The Sports Bank.net, an affiliate of Fox Sports.
