A few rumors have started flying from the west coast that Kyle Wiltjer is in serious considerations of transferring to Gonzaga. The 6’9” Wiltjer is from Portland, Oregon and committed to the University of Kentucky without even visiting the campus first. After being a key reserve on the 2012 National Championship team, Wiltjer was expected to be more of a force and possibly a starter for the ‘Cats this season. Wiltjer continued to struggle with his defensive presence, and strength issues as the season progressed. The one area where he was a consistent threat was his outside shooting, and even that has slumped considerably as he and Kentucky fell to Robert Morris 59-57 in the first round of the NIT. Wiltjer launched a three-pointer as time expired, which bounced off the back of the rim and was swatted away. Personally, I’ve always loved seeing Kyle Wiltjer in a Kentucky jersey and I’ve always rooted for him to do well. He’s a great kid and comes from an awesome family. Kyle appeared to love Kentucky when he was a recruit, and was a huge part in last year’s team winning the national championship. His defensive struggles really hurt this team, and his body appeared to not be ready for the physical nature of this college season. I had heard rumblings that the coaching staff was not happy with the way Wiltjer had prepared for this season. I really didn’t expect to hear anything more about him until basketball season comes around again. If Kyle Wiltjer is gone to Gonzaga, I genuinely wish him the very best in his college career and beyond. As the 3-point assassin on last year’s team, I was so happy to see him doing well and enjoying life at Kentucky, along with winning the national title. As more news comes available, I will pass it along.
