In another blow to a struggling program, reports surfaced Tuesday night that Arizona State men's basketball's leading scorer Trent Lockett will transfer from the program. CBSSports.com first reported Lockett's release from his scholarship with the Sun Devils on Tuesday and explained the junior guard plans to explore options closer to home in Minnesota due to his ill mother. ASUDevils.com further reported, via Twitter, that Lockett's mother is battling cancer. As ASU coach Herb Sendek's team struggled last season, finishing 10-21 and 6-12 in Pac-12 play, Lockett remained a bright spot. He missed time with an ankle injury during conference play but led the team with 13 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Lockett's departure from the program is the latest in a string of early exits, though the circumstances are markedly different. The program has seen 12 scholarship players dismissed or transfer in the last four seasons. This year alone has seen four players leave the program. Starting point guard Keala King, a sophomore, was dismissed in January for undisclosed conduct issues. Guardforward Chanse Creekmur decided to transfer closer to home to pursue football, and reports came over the weekend that forward Kyle Cain would transfer as well. As the roster stands now, ASU will return five scholarship players next season. The Sun Devils will also get freshman point guard Jahii Carson, who was ineligible this season, junior transfer guard Evan Gordon (Liberty) and sophomore transfer Bo Barnes (Hawaii), and three incoming freshmen. ASU officials were unavailable for comment.
