According to an article just published by FoxSports.com, legendary Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball coach Gary Williams is retiring after 22 seasons in College Park.
Williams won a total of 461 games during his time at Maryland, taking the team to 14 NCAA appearances, including seven Sweet 16 appearances.
As early as 2009, some in the sports media community were calling for the firing or resignation of Gary Williams, suggesting that he had lost touch with players and was no longer recruiting as well as once was true.
Williams was also criticized at times for Maryland’s poor graduation rate among its basketball players–but in retrospect–this graduation rate was not any lower than comparable institutions both in the ACC and other major basketball conferences.
Gary Williams appeared to have a vote of confidence from the Maryland administration, even after a disappointing 2010-2011 season in which the Terrapins finished 19-14– so it is obvious that his decision to retire was not based on pressure from the Maryland administration and more likely had something to do with the departure of Jordan Williams, his star player, to the NBA.
Either way, Gary Williams was a highly respected coach at Maryland and the basketball program there will not replace his leadership with ease.
