The hole was already going to be a large one to fill for Joe Jones and the Boston University men’s basketball team given the losses of seniors Dom Morris and D.J. Irving. That hole just got a lot bigger. Maurice Watson Jr., the Terriers’ leading scorer this past season and the lone BU player to make the All-Patriot League first team, will transfer from the school and look to play at a higher-level program for his final two years of eligibility. Jones said that he and BU have granted Watson his release from his final two years of eligibility, but it is not known where he will finish his collegiate career. Watson will have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. According to Jones, Watson went back-and-forth with his decision in the days since the top-seeded Terriers were eliminated by American in the Patriot League championship final, losing out on the automatic NCAA berth. Watson made his decision in the last 24 hours, Jones said. The news spread quickly as it’s a move that will change the balance of power in the league. “I think the big thing is we love Mo,” Jones told the Herald yesterday. “He had a tremendous impact on the program. We loved him. We just want the best for him. I think it would be great to have him stay. We would love for him to stay. “But we also want what is best for him.” The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 13.4 points and 7.1 assists per game last season in leading the Terriers to the Patriot League’s regular-season title. He recorded 17 assists in a postseason win against Army, establishing the NCAA high for the season. He finished his BU career with 410 assists, and his 248 assists this past season set a Patriot League single-season record. Watson sent out a series of tweets to explain his decision. “I want to thank the BU coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play college basketball at a top-10 academic institution,” he tweeted. “I also want to thank the BU community for embracing me these past two years. However, I have decided to explore other options for my JR & SR seasons. I want to play on a bigger stage.”
